I am a licensed tax preparer and I need to file past tax returns for a client who hasn't filed since the late 80's and has NO proof of income, doesn't even remember how much he earned or who he worked for. How do we get that information sooner than the 4 weeks it takes SSA to send us an earnings statement? Also, how many years back do we have to file? All of them, or does it just go back so far?

It's a little scary that a licensed tax preparer is asking these questions on Yahoo Answers.

That said: if the client can't provide any info, the only places you can get it are from the IRS or social security. And IRS probably wouldn't go back that far.

They're 20 years late, and you're worried about 4 more weeks?

As to filing, the client is legally required to file all the way back for all the missing returns. Any statute of limitations doesn't start running until a return is filed.
