for the money, try a used mountain bike.

you can probably find one on a local posting board or www.craigslist.org

In your price range, you are looking at department stores like Walmart, Target, etc. I would encourage you not to buy there. You get an inferior bike assembled by stock room help. You will wind up spending more in a bike store having the thing adjusted than you save by shopping there.

For about $250, you can get an entry level mountain bike in a bike store. The Trek 820 is a nice bike that fits right in there.

If you're gonna beat the cr*p outta it you might as well go used... But go for a good name like Specialized, Giant, Titus, etc. You could look at your local bike store's sidewalk sale or browse the craigslist or go to yardsales around your area. You REALLY should go to the bike shop and get fitted too since fit is crucial to riding... Just stay away from WalMart, Target, etc. They sell junk.

Good luck!

Find a really used rockhopper or any specialized in decent condition (If it hasn't been maintained take it to a bike shop).. As the other guy said www.craigslist.org... but ebay.com is a really good place to look aswell... Entry level hardtail trail bikes are atleast $400..

dude u really can't get any thing good for that little money the most that wyou will get is a supercycle that look kinda cool but don't be fooled by it's looks... it may look really good but the materials are crap and it can handel barely any beating if you take it up to the trails it will break on the first day even before you can make it to the blue trails.

Dude,
No lie. I bought a Schwinn for just those reasons. I am a heavy man and wanted a bicycle that could hold up under my weight and hold up under heavy use. The Schwinn I bought was about 175$ and has held up really well.
