I have been in under care for sinusitis and due to the cough and blowing my nose and lack of exercise I can do, my rib just under the breast and near the kidney is sore not stop. I put ice on it, does this mean I pulled a muscle or strain? What shouldI do, I took some pain meds and iced it but still hurts.

Coughing a lot can cause pulled muscles in the inner costal muscles of the rib cage. It's very difficult to get the pain down quickly In this area. Instead of ice use a heating pad or take a hot bath. You've got to relax these muscles. If you can get a deep tissue massage it would relieve the pain. use Advil tablets four times daily to help with the pain. If this continues after a week see your medical doctor.

Another less likely cause would be a swollen spleen which can happen when you have mono. I wouldn't worry about that unless you had other symptoms though. And anyway, in that event, you would just need to be careful not to play football or something where you could get hit hard in that area. If you had mono though, you'd feel really miserable in general. Just a thought is all. As far as a sore muscle though, really, all you can do is be less enthusiastic with the coughing and nose blowing from now on and stay as still as possible. I'd call the 24 hour nurse number and see if they have any thoughts. Sometimes a heating pad feels better on a sore muscle than ice. The ice is to take down any initial swelling and then you apply heat. I know that once when I had bronchitis, I coughed so hard I did pull something. They gave me this wrap that I could use to support my stomach muscles and told me to hold my arms over my stomach if I had to cough (also for support). I guess it helped somewhat. It's miserable, I know.

You muscle pain sounds like it came from coughing. It's muscle strain. There are probably some over the counter meds that will help. Take some Motrin. That's good for muscle pain. it's uncomfortable but it will get better on it's own.

Sounds like a strain. See your doctor. He can give you something better.
