I ask because I picked up a soda made in mexico and it actually was made with sugar.

I'm not sure, but I believe (I'm basing this on second hand information) that other countries tend to use actual sugar. The US doesn't because corn syrup is much cheaper.

Here in Canada we use High Glucose/Fructose a sugar derivative, so all our non -diet soft drinks are sugar based and Kosher, for diet you can get the aspartame ones along with a number sweetened with splenda.

As far as the US using a majority of Corn sweeteners for foods, the basic reason is cost and it is easier dissolved in products, plus it is very plentiful, but when they start using more corn for fuels in cars and trucks, they may have to go back to real sugar as the corn will be to expensive to make sweetener out of and in Mexico they will have no flour for tortillas

I live in New Zealand, and I very rarely see that as an ingredient, however when I in the States recently I did notice that ingredient a lot. So no, other countries don't use it as much.

We only use a ton of it because it is cheaper. A lot of countries still use the real thing!
