Lots of places. Though LA is an expensive area--you may consider newspaper ads of people who are selling theirs. Consignment shops. Or wearing a prom gown. Look into getting one custom made. It really isn't that expensive. There are lots of sewing/alterations shops in the area that would do it for not too much money.
My friend ordered hers custom made from China on Ebay. She sent them all the measurements of her body (arm length, shoulder to bust, shoulder to waist, etc) and it was around $150. it was GORGEOUS and it fit beautifully.
Department stores have prom dresses up like

Debs does too but they've taken them off their website

What are you looking for--sleek ballgown? formal casual? Here are some great sites to try out that have TONS of gorgeous dresses.
http://www.dessy.com/
(style 1002 and 1004 are my favorites)

Also try looking up special occasion dresses. White is very much customary for communion dresses, graduation dresses--so if you are having a more casual wedding that would be fine. What kind of dress are you looking for? The more casual, destination wedding dresses are less expensive.
Also try this site. They had a lot that I loved.
http://www.bridalonlinestore.com/ has a lot of gorgeous dresses, both destination brides and under bridesmaids many of which are white.
I hope these give you some idea of what you can look for. Hope I helped!

You should definately try ebay. Believe me I used to work for an ebay listing agency, and there was a local bridal store consolidating its merchandice. We listed $900+ dollar dresses for less than $200. Georgeous-NEVER WORN!
Plus by the experience we had with them, not alot of people by wedding dresses from ebay, so the chances of someone out bidding you are slim! GOOD LUCK!

Try ebay......I have seen some gorgeous ones on there and my niece just got her deb ball gown off of there and it was fabulous. She had to send in all her measurements and I mean every measurement!!! And the gown fit perfectly and cost about $150 Australian all up! At least worth taking a look.

Get a bridesmaid's gown in white, ivory, or cream. It will save you tons of money, and no one knows what "rack" you bought it off of, when you're wearing it.
