Define "Church".
Maybe God has a different definition.
Read the Bible.

I think you are wrong, Daniel:
The thing is, you are not bound to attend a specific church. You have a choice.
God says the Sabbath is a holy convocation. That is a gathering of the saints, and Isaiah 66:23 says the saints will gather each Sabbath before the the Lord throughout eternith.
When you study the N.T. Church, Daniel, you will see that God established a certain order. The disciples were to establish churches with elders over them. These were men able to teach.
In Hebrews Paul says not to forsake the assemblying together. You see, Heaven is all unity--Lucifer was the lone wolf. And he would have you loose the fellowship and strength of human companionship.
Concerning your pastor. Although hypocritical, he is right in telling you not to live extravagantly--the apostles would have told you the same thing: Love not the world and the things in the world. For he who loves the world is not of the Father, but of the world...
If I had a lot of friends in the church, I'd stay there for the unity, and study the Bible. See, the Bible says "it is better to trust in the Lord than to put your confidence in men" (Psalms 118:8) And God wants you to trust in Him, too.

I'd never trust a pastor that doesn't practice what they preach. This happened to me before too, a rich pastor, kinda blew the concept of being humble. I don't ever join a church, though I attend, but not that church of course. Every year, at the annual membership drive, I politely decline. I give every Sunday, just won't join. Luckily, we have a great pastor, but if it ever happens again, I'll leave, no biggy, and no annual promise of money to get billed for, which they actually do. My grandmother had alzheimers and came to live with us. I started getting these ridiculous bills for tithing she had promised. Of course, she had alzheimers, so she had tithed more money than she ever had, but the bills kept coming. They didn't stop until I threatened to go public about them trying to rip off a sick old lady. Just gotta be cautious when selecting a church to attend.

You can't let one individual deter you from having a relationship with God. Yes there are some false prophets out there and the bible tells us to beware. However, there are also some Pastor's out there who genuinely love the Lord. There is nothing wrong with having nice things but a person shouldn't put all of their time and energy into obtaining them. When people put material things above everything else, those things become their God. I believe that is the real point that your Pastor is trying to make. You shouldn't really hold it against your Pastor if God has blessed him with a nice home and car. You yourself may one day be blessed. I will keep you in my prayers friend. Peace and God bless.

No! God say to trust no man or put trust in things, but to trust him. The church are the called out ones for God through Jesus. It is people, not the building. People grow in Christ at different levels.
Even pastors continue to grow and make corrections. I am divorced, yet I teach against divorce, because as an ambassador of God I have to speak what God has given me to teach. Does this make me a hypocrite, no, because we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
Ministers are to walk the walk and talk the talk, but if they could only speak to the things they have not being guilty of, very little would get said of done.
Suggestion: why not go to the Bible and believe what it says.

You're haven't stopped attending church because you are no longer a Christian.....you see something wrong with the specific church you attend.
Maybe another church would be good for you.......the christian Church does teach that attending a church and being an active part of the "body" of the church is important to your faith AND the faith of the others in your church.....you inter-depend on each other to achieve true relationship with God.......
Keep being the good and conscientious guy you are and keep attending a church.

I don't go to church any more. I got sick of all of the people talking about all of the other people. I decided I could have a relationship with God without the church.
I don't expect Christians to be perfect. I know we are all human. But I don't need to be influenced by these people who think they are better than everyone else just because they "live" at the church and sit on every committee and attend every function and service.

If you were so faithful and you didn't feel that was the church for you, why wouldn't you just pray about it and try other churches until you found the one where you felt at peace about? I'm not sure why people who say they are believers give up on Christ because of a bad experience at church.

Not for seeing the hypocracy going on. The Bible says to "get out of her my people if you do not want to share with her in her sins." That is false religion. It has nothing to do with the true religion of the Bible.
Jesus had the clergy of his day turning Jerusalem temple into a money pit. They were trying to line their pockets with cash back then too. He got so mad he threw them out of the temple with a whip. He said they were getting their reward in full then as they would have no reward in his kingdom.
Rather, what you should do is to seek out the true religion. Do this in a simple way. Take a religions beliefs and compare it to what the Bible says. EXample: What is the religion's view of the soul? Look in the back of your Bible in the concordence under "soul". You will find most of the verses soul is mentioned. See what they say. Does the religion agree with the scriptures? If it doesn't, it is a false religion. Look elsewhere.

yes, you can not blame God for someone else mistakes besides Scripture says "The worker is worth his wage" It sounds like this pastor though is getting his reward on Earth rather than in Heaven. What kind of doctrine does he teach? You should still go to Church though. people do not pray like they should without a regimented schedule to do so.

Avoid THAT church. But not all. They aren't all alike.
I have a church right across the street. I go there if I want to see snooty people in leather jackets, shorts and flip-flops. And hear the pastor give a sermon on the latest movie he saw...
I avoid it.
I travel to a church where my soul gets fed. I love this church.
