It saves water because there is less evaporation. This means that more of the water will get to the plants.

jj gets a thumb up and should get the best answer.
Watering in the day when it's sunny and hot does slow cook the plants. Evening watering disturbs the all good that earthworms do. So setting the timer for about 4:00 AM for a short while works out best. The plants are full of fresh morning dew and the extra water helps and moisturizes the ground. It all evaporates when the sun gets a little high but the plant roots have a supply of water to get them through the day.

most people use water in the day time ,so it is less pressure on the water systems and more pressure for your garden hose

Also water evaporate easily if it is in the air under the sun as happens with sprinklers and so the ground(plants)require more and you will need to have the water running for longer

if you sprinkle at night you use less and the ground gets wetter because it is colder and the water falls quicker ,and usually there is less wind in the night so the water falls straight down

On top of that plants ,that are hot go into recesion like a kind of temporary hibernation ,this means that they absorb less water and if it is very hot ,you can even burn the plants .

In the night they are fully operational about absorbing water because in Nature that is the wet time any way ,with condensation going on

day time is for evaporation in the cycle of precipitation.

believe it or not setting your sprinkle at night makes more sense than you would think. Plants up take water through opening called stomata. Now the trick is. During the day these stomata are closed. Otherwise the plant would actually dehydrate and die. So when you flood your lawn in the day. You are actually doing just that and nothing more. With more than ?(50%) if i remember correctly evaporating. So by watering at night you ensure that the plant actually gets the water that your adding rather than evaporating during the day, due to transpiration and so on.

Since the sun is not out at night, there is less evaporation, meaning less of the water breaks down to hydrogen and oxygen. It stays water, a liquid. It has the chance to soak into the ground, to get to the roots of the plants in the Earth and nourish them, quench their thirsty cells. What water the plants cannot absorb has the chance to reach the underground animals, like worms and bugs-- also good for our plants and gardens since they till the Earth for us and help the plants to grow. If there is even more water, it has the chance to reach the underground stores and be re-used by people someday in the future.
Water that is turned to vapor by evaporation might become rain, but it might not rain on the city in which it became vapor, so it might not do the person watering any good, either way. Better to water at night and avoid that evaporation effect. Your plants will thank you!

My sprinklers are programmed to return on merely till now daybreak and an hour till now nightfall so as that the water would be absorbed into the soil till now it gets too warm and burns my flowers or gets mildewy from the water sitting there at evening. the belief is to permit the water sufficient time to soak into the soil and do the main solid for the flowers and the grass. in case you water for the duration of the middle of the day, most of the water evaporates till now it even hits the floor. in case you water too previous due at evening, the status water will become a breeding floor for mildew and bugs.

The best time to water is 5 am. The ground is damp with dew, thus allowing more water to be aborbed. The sun won't evaporate the water. If you water at night you could get mold and mildew in your lawn, even some diseases that could kill your grass.

The heat of the day, and the sun causes more of the water to evaporate. So less gets into the plants system......

because since the sun is not out at night the water will have time to get into the ground before it starts to evaporate.
