I was wondering what the English word for this color was:

Basically, by speaking of colors, French "châtain" is in English "chestnut". However there are so many shades (nuances) of col. châtain that's impossible to find the exact correspondent in English without specifying of which kind of châtain color you're questioning.
It's existing the "châtain" that's in English commonly known as "Chestnut" (and this should be the answer to your question) but there's also the "châtain clair" that's in English "Tan", the "châtain moyen" that corresponds to the "light brown" or "light tan" and finally the "châtain foncé" that's in English the "brown" or "dark brown", depending on the color deepness.

I'm sorry but light brown would be BRUN PALE ..chestnut is the correct way to us the word

It means light brown. (From the French dictionnary "Le petit Larousse illustré")
Not chestnut which is dark brown.
