I see your question has inspired some informed and thoughtful debate! In fact the true nature of the issue is raised by the responses, I think. A nation of immigrants gone mad with xenophobia.

Yes, if they legalize, they'll be more likely to pay taxes (though some do now with ITIN numbers) and contribute to public education etc. Moreover, if they legalize, the government will know where they are--good for security. If they legalize, college will be reachable for the kids. If they legalize, they can drive WITH a license and get insurance--public safety benefit. If they legalize, they won't be afraid to report criminal activity to the police--also public safety benefit.

One thing that won't happen for many: they won't stop being brown. So they will remain targets of bigots.

No amnesty.

I say don't just post a stupid 1 word question. I have to ask after amnesty then what? How do we get everyone in the system- make them pay into the system like the rest of the legal citizens. Tax them hard on exporting help of any kind to other nations. Most immigrants say they are working to support a family in their homeland. Well the best way to support a family is from the inside out. Go to your nation -and fix the corruption there- demand higher wages- fight for a just government. Do not come here and Demand equal and fair justice when you the intent is not support America but to support another country bring down America.

Jorge,...no one said that illegals were 'mooching' on Americans, in my book. They work hard, but they ARE taking good jobs that used to be taken by legal citizens here...to save the dishonest employer a big savings at the expense of workers who don't even know half the time what they are doing...It will NOT solve anything,..and what about people that have paid dearly? And Jorge..what about illegals from IRAQ..and CHINA coming in, and screaming discrimination? this is the REAL issue.....

I think it would be good to know who is here in the country. This offers a way for people to be accounted for. It's also a way to see if they are on some FBI terror watch list, or have a criminal record.

I agree with you... Isn't the tax problem what most people are upset about? If they stay here legally, they'll have to pay taxes just like any other citizen.

Dictionary.com defines "amnesty" as:

1. a general pardon for offenses, esp. political offenses, against a government, often granted before any trial or conviction.
2. Law. an act of forgiveness for past offenses, esp. to a class of persons as a whole.
3. a forgetting or overlooking of any past offense.

Since Congress' proposal seems to be doing exactly what is defined above, I'd have to say YES, it amounts to amnesty for millions of criminals (defined as those who are BREAKING THE LAW)! To allow these criminals a free ride for their crimes, we are spitting in the face of our justice system. How long before we start looking the other way for other criminals? Do we just start giving free passes to any low-life with no respect for our country's rules and regulations?

I'm an illegal immigrant, and I don't give a damn.. I work hard n pay taxes. I don't really care about an amnesty or at least it don't bother me, I don't see the difference, I'm American too, an smarter than a lot of people, I have a wonderful life, in fact, so much better than most of those stupid racist ignorants, they don't like us because we are better persons, but, who cares, we do like them ha ha

My fellow Americans, We are in the fight for the very existence of a great people, the American people. Americans are of many colors and ethnicity but we all call ourselves Americans, not Mexicans, not Koreans, not Germans, we are Americans nothing else. We have liberal Americans, Conservative Americans, libertarian Americans, Socialists Americans, many beliefs and ideologies but we are Americans all the same. We believe in Freedom, we cherish our right to bear arms, we express the right to vote if we so choose to do so, but a great people has been called to account. We have grown weak, our enemies have surrounded that city upon a hill, and have laid siege to our nations cities. One by one cities have declared their loyalty to the Nation of Mexico, one by one sanctuary cities are born from the ruins of once great cities, cities built by Americans for Americans. Our borders have been overrun we stand now on the brink of a great revolution, we must now more then ever send a message to the Politicians of Washington, we are fed up and we are not going to take it anymore! We will not stand by as our nations cities infrastructure is collapsed under the weight of the illegal alien scourge, hospitals are overwhelmed, schools are bursting at the brim, the cost of living is at an all time high, crime is up, are prisons are rioting, killer gangs, drugs, aliens, and disease spread unchecked across our Nation!

If you did one thing important in your life, it will be to fight this endless flood of illegal aliens, stand united with your brothers and sisters of America, The United States the People of this great experiment must become United in our resolve to end this madness, bring order to our streets and communities, we must our we will perish. We cannot fail, our we will watch as our nation burns to the ground, if we must then we will put down our very lives, and that of our children’s lives, we must risk our fortunes, and our own safety, this is a fight that must be fought, everything is now up to our generation, it is our time. I call upon all Americans take up arms if you must, but fight damn you fight, spread the word, Americans must stand united, don’t give in don’t back down, every generation has its revolution its time for another one.
