I would suggest going to the akc website for informational purposes. look at the toy group since u are wanting a small dog. ck out each breed for activity level, size range, if they are vocal (bark alot!) etc. even pick out a few that would work for u. go to a shelter and ask about those breeds or breed mixes and dont look at the others since they arent what u are looking for. Or search for a responsible breeder & good luck!
a few posts have suggested shih tzu (the proper spelling) and they are a GREAT lil dog, have had 3. HOWEVER, they are high maintenance, require daily comb outs & regular grooming whether u opt to keep them in full coat or shave them. they are prone to eye issues as most dogs with prominant eyes are. (all of mine saw an opthamologist and had daily eyedrops for life, which can get very expensive, one would have eventually gone blind without them) not a one was truly a lap dog, they liked it for a bit, but usually wanted down. Ive heardthe males are more lap dog oriented than females.
Please research before u decide. If you dont want to take them for walks everyday & have playtime etc. then you dont want a high energy dog, like a jack russell terrier, which is also a GREAT lil dog. just be informed and you'll find the right fit!!
good luck!

We lived in a small, one-bedroom apartment years ago and we got a basset puppy. They are loving, enjoy laying across the lap, curling up in bed, and don't require a large yard for exercise. Know that there is no guarantee any dog will want to be a lap dog!

Many people think that a small space should equal a small dog but in my experience this is just not true. Get a lab! They are the perfect inside dog believe it or not. And they actually are easy to take care of no matter what your living quarters are.

I've had Rotties, Great Danes, Boxers and the like all believe they'd fit in my lap.
True lap dogs are Papillions, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels
and Toy Poodles.

You have lots of suggestions. I have a mixed pouch, she loves everyone, some would say she is a spaniel, but whatever her breed, make your inspection at the animal shelter or whatever is available. Females are more suitable in my opinion, but I have only had females. There may be a place that is less expensive than another, if cost is a factor. Look and call around.

i would suggest getting a dog who's personality fits your lifestyle. just because a dog is small doesn't mean that it's going to be a lap dog. and also different dogs within a breed have different personalities, so 1 maltese may love sitting in your lap while another one just wants to run around and be crazy.

Shihtzu's are so cute and cuddly and loving. Schnauzers are very intelligent and entertaining and very loyal and friendly, the have a tremendous bark, though. rat terriers are comedic and smart. LLahso apsos are adorable. I love all those dogs but i tell you what, my retriever is a rock star if you wanted to go big, he's a real couch potato too and that's pretty cool.

HI, Look at ShihTzu's they are the best little lap dogs. They live to be loved and love you right back. They only get to about 10 to 14 pounds so think about a ShihTzu!

daushunds are great little dogs and make great lap dogs. they are hard to train though. i found if you put the dog on a leash on a tile floor covered with papers in the circumference of the leash for a week then slowly lower the amount of paper weekly it works well. it takes about 4 weeks to train. you can let it off the leash to play and hold.

The best suggestion I can give you is go to the shelter and adopt. Don't look for a particular breed, just see who 'clicks' with you. Make at least two trips, and make sure to try to meet everyone. I think that adoption should always be the first option, you can help save a life.
