Ok, so I bought my Acer laptop a while ago and it had XP on it installed. A few months ago I installed Vista. Now I realized my mixer (BCD2000) does not support Vista yet. So I'm trying to install XP (clean) create partition and then install Vista again. There was no Windows XP CD with my laptop but I'm using the disk from my desktop. When I insert the XP CD it loads all the things during installation and then when everything is loaded and its time for the actuall install, the laptop just shuts down. The Acer Alt+F10 recovery does not work, I made a DVD from it too but it doesn't boot up. So someone tell me how to install XP.

ok update... the XP disk I'm using is retail Windows XP Pro, from the store as I built the laptop myself and I bought the CD from Microcenter... that's the interesting part... the XP disk that's crashing is retail, not a recovery CD...

When you first turned on your laptop you should have been prompted to burn recovery CDs, you should use them. If you didn't do this then call Acer support and they will sell you the recovery CDs that you need.

You can't use the wrong disk to re-install. There should either be a recovery disk or recovery partition, if you have been playing with partitions I think you may have wiped out your recovery system. The only answer is to contact the manufacturers and see if they can supply a cd recovery set. Most manufacturers will do this, but I doubt you will get much joy from Acer by previous experience.

A recovery disk...which is what you have...is useless once you wipe the OS, as it needs the OS there to "recover."

You should *always* insist on an OS disk...even if it costs a few extra bucks.

You have two choices...bite the bullet and buy a copy of XP, or send your laptop into Acer for "repairs."

You are correct about the partition but you need to change the BIOS (Boot Order Sequence ) to boot from the cd-rom or dvd rom. I do believe you have to hit the F2 key on the keyboard to access the BIOS.
