see i play piano by ear and i find it interesting, i mean, its not something i would totally admire but thats me. I find alot of people either totally discriminate about it by saying "you too cheap to take lessons or something? you cant be a pianist until you take lessons" and some say "omg its amazing! how do you do that?". Its just so annoying considering the fact people assume me to be terrible cause i cant read music. in 8th grade i did 2 songs on the piano for chior for a little group project and the concert was in 2 days!, i learned "im already there " from that country band and "if i saw you in heaven" by eric clapton. the day after the concert people were like "wow you were good" and asked how i learned those songs and i told them i did it by ear and they were like "ya well it actually sucked" i shouldnt go by what people think but its such a downer and i feel cheap since everyone percieves me as "cheap"

The skill you have is pretty gifted and amazing. Don't feel bad at all. I have been professionally educated on piano for 13 years and i started at 4, but even I some times cannot play stuff by ear, and make out chords in a song. Piano is an instrument, you make music out of it, It is not a where you are locked in and need to have certain education to play. Music just works. So if you don't want a professional career out of it, don't waste time and money on it. The skill you have is wonderful, and it is great to hear that you can play songs for choir and stuff just from listening.

Don't feel bad. I sing by ear, I can't read music nor I even use it at all. I only listen to the music and sing, even harmonies. I am very involved in musical theater and I have been just fine. Sometimes I feel bad that I am not clasically trained, but for the most part I feel good. The people who call you cheap because they are jealous of you. Playing by ear is a real talent, a lot of people don't have it. You can just listen to something and play it where as they have to pay for lessons and practice it a million times to sound decent. So just keep your head up high and keep on playing!! Don't listen to anyone else!

Don't feel bad- the ability to play by ear is a gift. I cruised thru my first 4 or so years of piano lessons as a child becuase my teacher would play a piece for me before he started teaching it and without realizing it i was playing it mostly by ear and not really reading the notes. Then he busted me..lol... and things got alot harder. Now, as an adult who plays music professionally, i rarely ever get the sheets for anything. Enjoy your gift. But, you SHOULD learn to read, just to enhance your playing......it will open so many more doors for you musically!

Hey, I and a lot of other people play the same way you do, by ear, and we are not all cheap and some of us are real good. Don't worry about what others say about how you are learning, just as long as it sounds good to you it doesn't really matter what they think.

My father plays several instruments by ear. He has been performing in various local bands for 30 years. His sheet music is a list of songs, and how he pre-sets a couple of settings on his keyboard.

He also plays fiddle, accordian, drums, a couple I am forgetting, and all by ear.

As for those who say you are good, then you suck. Simply answer this way.

Can you play it? Until you can play it better than I can, keep your mouth shut.
