I am a Windows operator now, but I am planning on switching to Mac. I was wondering what all Mac has the Windows doesn't, and other cool features. I would also like to know about which Mac is best suitable for a student/ gamer kid? Any Mac experts out there? Please help! Thanks!!!

While it is true that macs have less viruses and malware, that is not because they have a better security model, they have fewer users, and writers generally want to attack as many people as they can (a la Windows.) Mac OS X is actually pretty cool. It has some cool Mac only features, like Widgets, however, be prepared as a lot of things change, such as the filing system.

As for gaming, Mac has none. Again, this goes to the majority users. Nobody develops for the Mac (games) because of the limited users, so don't expect to be playing too many newer (as in post 1998) games on it.

Also, if you have some software that you really like and use, chances are there won't be a Mac version. Some software does have mac versions (Like office 03), but again, because the majority of users are Windows users, developers don't want to put in a lot of time with porting their programs to Mac.

Anyway, Macs are really good for picture and video editing. That is really thier finest work, but as a home computer, it is truely lacking in my opinion.

For a student, a PC is almost a must have over a Mac. I know I use a few programs for my college that are not available on mac. You would have to use the labs.

Hope this helps,
Tyler

i'm not sure which edition of windows your running, or what the new vista OS has in it...but i too switched from windows to mac some time ago. last version i ran was NT, 'cause 2000 sucked & i wasn't gonna shell out the cash MS wanted for XP.
one thing i noticed was the ease of doing "everyday" things like importing a picture into a text document, things of this nature. everything is drag & drop. wether or not windows has now ripped this off, i dunno.

also, you never have to format anything to get it to work, like hard drives (which i believe is no longer needed on XP) the only exception being an iPod: if you have a windows-based iPod, do not plug it into a Mac, it'll be a ***** to get your songs back (if those were your only copy).

there are programs that will allow you to run windows apps, like Virtual PC, but i don't think it's supported any longer. there's also free programs off the net that'll do the same thing, but i think they'll req 10.4 or later. (won't be an issue w/ a brand new mac).

check this place out...read thru the descriptions & you'll be able to find something that'll suit your needs/budget...

Mac OS X has a much improved security model over Windows - you won't be getting all those Microsoft nasties such as viruses, adware, spyware and the like!

You also won't have to worry about regsitry problems on Mac OS X, and you won't have to run "defrag" every day.

Mac OS X is also more stable than Windows - should a program enter a hung state it won't bring the whole OS spiraling down with it like in Windows!

Mac OS X isn't great for games as there is only a limited selection (things like World of Warcraft and whatnot), but it is better for students, on-line work, graphics, music and videos.

Mac's are horrible! I use both a Mac and a PC at work, and the Mac is the biggest headache in the world! Since you said gamer, definetly DO NOT BUY A MAC.

well my husband is a mac addict and what i mostly know about them is that they are not as prone to viruses as pcs and that they are great for graphics. otherwise, get what you can afford and i'm sure you won't go wrong.

it is true that there are less mac versions of games. that is something to consider. online too. like yahoo games, etc., it's harder to find mac-compatible stuff.
