I'm a cop in a small southern town. I've met and talked with other cops from all over the nation. I can tell you that there is a common thread that binds all of us.

Everyone is unique in one way or the other. Cops from New York are somewhat different from cops in L.A..Cops from the midwest are somewhat different from cops in the northeast. Southern cops are different in this respect also. We are all products of the places we live.

In my opinion though, there are a lot more similarities than differences. Even reading the answers here on Yahoo by police officers from all over the world, you can see that we all basically think alike. We all have the same job to do. We all deal with the same typical people on a daily basis. We all face the indifference by the public and their general misunderstanding of our duties.

But I think the strongest similarity is that if I were traveling through New York, or L.A., or any other place and saw a police officer in need of assistance I would put my life on the line to help him. I feel that most any officer from any other place would do the same for me. Why? Because we are cut from the same cloth. They may make fun of my accent, or make Barney Fife jokes, but I would trust them with my life; and would hope that they trust me with theirs.

Don't believe all the stereotypical things you hear about anyone. Just because we talk slow doesn't mean that we think slow. Believe it or not, I've never had sex with any of my relatives. I do not chew tobacco, I have most of my teeth, I can spell some big words (not all, but some) and I don't say "Boy, you in a heep of trouble" when I pull someone over. I don't burn crosses or belong to any racist organization.

We have the same problems in my little town that you find in any city. We have drugs, gangs, prostitution, drive-by shootings, rapes, murders, robberies, burglaries, and every other crime problem that the rest of the country has. And we handle those problems basically the same way.

On any weekend, come up the coast and see if you can find parking at Neptune's Net. It's like a bike show (all kinds and from all over) and killer seafood. PCH 1 On third Sundays of any month, try the car/bike show put on by Jalopy Joe's on Main St in Ventura. They usually have a ride after the show. Also, there's The Shop, a motorcycle museum in Ventura. Check out the Deer Lodge on Highway 33. Lots of bikes, good food ( they feature various game meats). And highway 33 is just a blast itself. If you want to go north from Santa Barbara, I suggest the Cachuma Lake Pass, it reunites with the 101 in Bueltin, where besides a motorcycle museum, there are plenty of good eats including Anderson's Split Pea Soup.

haha funny you should ask, our cops here use the towns money to put gas in the cop cars and then drive their kids to school, work shopping and so on , we have had one cop arressted for drinking and driving and drugs, and the rest of them are close to being rent a cops. our town has around 1200 people if that and most of our cops are also our local bussiness men , city coucil does nothing because they will not give up the moeny and in the mean time they liek to pass out tickets to kids for skateboarding well the local crack head is on his porch smoking it up...

The important thing to remember about police anywhere is that they are drawn from the communities they serve. Meaning the officer has the same education, prejudices, and attitude as the population he is hired from.

To me, they seem power happy with strong southern accents. But, if you're cute they'd be willing to let you off the hook. They also use souther words like "beau" "missy" "over yonder".. that sort of thing..
