The dog I am dogsitting is chewing baseballs and swallowing the outside. Is this bad for him? Should I take the balls away? He hate half the skin. I have had dogs but never any that would eat the outside of the baseball

The dog is a lab pit mix. He did not eat much of it at all. About the size of a half dollar if not less. I took it away after he laid down and chewed on it for a second and I noticed there was nothing on the ground around him.

Please remember that common sense is a relative term. Outside of a baseball is made of leather, their owner gives them rawhide. They are make from cow hide.

But I do eat baseballs all the time.

Can someone suggest there something safer to play fetch with?

Yes take the balls away, the outer shell could be made of toxic materials and make the dog very sick or even poison him! TAKE IT AWAY NOW!

:-)

Yes, very bad. Dunno what kind of dog it is, but more than likely it could cause an intestinal blockage which requires surgery. The outside of a baseball is leather, which is why dogs like it. Yes, take it away QUICKLY and let the owners know he ate it, so they can watch him for the next couple days. That said, he could have made it a habit to eat baseballs, and so he might be chewing it into small enough pieces that can be passed safely. Take it away, let the owners know.

As a general rule of being a responsible dog owner you should not allow your dog to eat anything that you have not given it. I don't know how big this dog is or how much of the outside of the ball it is consuming but there could be problems and they could be potentially fatal. I do not give my dogs any recreational consumables such as rawhide chews, cow hooves, pigs ears as I have personally spoken to pet owners who have lost pets to these items. They are potentially deadly. It would be ok to allow the dog to tear up baseball if it does not consume anything. My dogs tear up toys and make a mess but they do not consume anything. I'm glad you asked the question but I'm kind of amazed that your common sense did not kick in and resolved the question.

You shouldn't be concerned if your dog is a Lab, because my lab's they eat everything and they still won't get sick, but they will stop around the age of 2, as long as you give them sticks,
and chew toys, they will be alright. If they are not a Lab, then take them to the vet's to get a check-up.

You'll want to take him to the vet now. Anything that you shouldn't eay he shouldn't eat.

Better question should be-

Do you eat baseballs all the time?
