My wife and I are looking to buy a second hand car and found a 1.6 litre Renault Megane Scenic on sale (T-plate). We're going to phone about taking it for a test drive tomorrow.

What are the pros and cons of this model? What problems should I look out for?

I've got scenic 1.6vvti (new shape) which replaced the wifes older T plate scenic diesel.

To be honest, the biggest thing I'd say is avoid the petrol and go for a diesel. PSA Diesel engines are bulletproof, whereas the petrol units (particularly the IDE engines) have no end of problems with sensors. I've had more issues with my 2004 model scenic than the older model you're looking at, and they've all been engine electrical related. Whether thats related just to my facelifted model I don't know but worth noting.

Build quality was a OK, not half as bad as people would have you believe and I'd recomend getting a model with as few electrical gadgets as possible. Base diesel models are the best buy with a this model thats out of warranty now.

Before you buy the scenic, take a look at the Zafira, despite being a touch boring, it beats the Scenic hands down for reliable fmily motoring.

Hi. I just bought a 2004 model of the scenic, 160000 km. I did not read much about it before I bought it and thought it had the same qulity as my 2000 model scenic. The owner told me what had happened to the car during it's life. Windows fell into the door, and display had to be changed and the heater started getting nervous and coupled out sometimes speed 2 and now I experience tht 2 is OK but 4 does not work. After reading about the car, i am nervous to see if somethings happens, especially with something that has to do with the electric systems. I got a shock when I opened the bonnet. You hardly can check the oil because of the narrow space. And I read that you probably have to go to the garage to change the bulbs when worn out! The positive thing is that it is well insuated soundwice and the comfort is very goood as french custom is. Lots of space and the swing radius is very narrow which is a good feature. The roof hatch is rattleing and I am not sure what that is, may be some new rubber linings are the solution. I think the quality differs from car to car, but I would not have bought this car if I knew more about it before I bought it. The price was low, though, so there must be something hidden, and the reports say what it is: windows, display, electric. By the way, the engine must be run a little "japanese", because on low speed it has not much power. Scenic is known for it's good build aginst rust. If you want an old Scenic, I would rather reccomend the model berfore this one. It is very comfortable too and easy to maintain. Instruments are "normal" an engine very good. I have had very few problems with it and now it has eaten 164000 km.

I had a "P" 97 model 1.6, one of the first off the boat. Never broke down in 5 years. Sad to see it go but I just had to buy that soft top. Only problem was a persistant oil leak from the top of the engine; not a drip but could smell it. Fixed twice, once under warranty and again just before sale. The immobiliser/alarm could have a mind of its own at times; never failed to run, but the immobiliser engages after about 1 minute with the key out, and sometimes it did the alarm/locking as well. Suggest always keeping the key in your hand

I had a Megane Classic 1.6 (S reg) that was an absolute money pit. Finally gave up on it after 4 years and 74,000 miles when the gear box needed replacing. Avoid like the plague and buy a Hyundai with a 5 year warranty.

On a 99 model check for rust on rear wheel arches. Listen for wheel bearing noises. On a 99 the model changes to a face lift model and theres normally around £500 of difference between f\lift and pre f\lift cars. Don't listen to other people, the engines on these are pretty hard wearing if its serviced regularly and at this age they're not notorious for electrical faults like alot of the younger renaults. Try to buy one with full service history though.

leaks if it is the double sunroof model, also some leak from the screen, both are a complete bugger to repair.
