This depends on the cause of which there are two specific reasons, muscular and skeletal.

If muscular, then a warm bath and some ralgex/massage, followed by rest - three days and everything will settle down. If skeletal, it may be a prolapsed disc, also known as slipped disc which can be extremely limiting. This too can settle with time but may require surgery where the bones are fused together, however with no certainty of success.

My husband has had back problems for years. At one point the doctor asked "What kind of floors do you have?" I answered "Wooden." He was delighted. It seems that lying on a hard wooden floor is the best thing. Try putting a blanket down on the floor and putting ice on your back for 30 minutes at a time. It helped my husband with his problems.
You might also check out going to the chiropractor.
Hope this is of some help and I hope it will make you feel better.

My husband has cronic back pain and uses one of those BIG round plastic balls from the PT tech and it's working well for him. He also does exercises every morning and every evening. If this is a new pain try to walk it out. Try Ibuprophine (Advil) vs. tylenol fto help reduce the possible swelling. If it's several days old SEE YOUR DR. you may need some meds
