i am considering the following: navy, army, airforce, marines. i want to know the deployment times for each branch.from what i've read, navy=6 months, airforce=4 months (?), army=14months, and marines=6 months (?) if these are correct, why do the marines have short deployment times? is it because they are in the department of the navy? the reason i ask is because my girlfriend doesnt want me to go away for too long. also, i want to go to one the the service academies (USNA, USAFA, USMA).
thanks.
my girlfriend thinks that navy officer dress blues are the hottest uniform. ladies, what do you think?

every single Branch has deployments that last 12 months or more. and those are just the long oines.. there are always shorter time periods when you are away for training or excercises.
My husban is Navy and is facing a 12-14 month deployment in the near future.

The Marines are not technically a separate branch of the military; they are under the Department of the Navy, and as such are subject to the same or similar deployment times. The standard Army deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan is 12 months, although 15-mo. and 18-mo. seem to be more frequent. The Air Force has by far the shortest deployment times and the fewest people actually deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, except for maybe the Navy. The ones who do get deployed there stay on airbases and don't typically go outside the wire or do much fighting to speak of; most of the Air Force personnel there are the ones who maintain, load, and unload all the planes that come through, plus a few small other roles, such as weather staff.
Typically it's the Air Force that has dress blues; some Army officers have dress blues, as well. I don't recall seeing that many, if any, Navy personnel in dress blues.

None of these are likely to be correct anymore. Our military is over extended. Did you hear recently about the extension of the Army deployments to 12 months from 15?
A lot of troops went there expecting 12 months and wound up there for 15 and now some of them have been there 18.
My husband is in the Airforce... they've extended some of those deployments too.
Its real fun.
If you're worried about deployment times... just wait until this whole fiasco blows over and you don't have to worry about it anymore. There's no telling whats going to happen next. Its either gonna get worse, or its gonna get better... but right now who knows!
Air Force is also filling roles in the Army where they need to be filled. Its not as uncommon as I'd like it to be.

As for blues.... MARINE CORPS has the best...
As for the deployments, Army and Airforce have lengthened their minimum deployment time to a year, meaning you will be gone for a year at the very least... Navy goes on floats of six months to a year, don't rightly know how long theirs are
Marine Corps.... something i know well
Deployments depend entirely on your unit. Grunts (infantry men) go there for anywhere from 10 to 14 months, POGS which is most other jobs, 6 months to a year, but again it depends on your job

National Guard is the only Branch, its part time work though so don't expect to live off the salary. You can and will be deployed so you need to be prepared for that. Army National Guard goes through the same exact basic training (BCT) as regular army, you will be alongside regular army recruits the whole time. BCT will probably be at Ft Benning Georgia, after that your A school will depend on what MOS you get. You need to find out what units are near your home, so you can pick a MOS that you can get to easily. Use the Unit Finder on the National Guard website to see what Units, and which MOS those units specialize in, are near you. Good Luck, if you have 60 College Credits you can get in as an Officer there is a 10K sign up bonus for that, and more monthly pay.

In the Navy the deployment time is dependent on what type of ship you're on, and if you're even on a ship at all. Carriers usually go out for 6-7 months, subs usually only 3-4 months, but schedules are always changing. If you're not on a ship you can go for a year or more. Also between deployments they go underway for weeks at at time for various reasons.
And yes, dress blues are sexy!
