Yes, but you have to be an experienced breeder with a responsible breeding program. As one answerer said it is called line breeding and is done to help imprint a desirable genetic trait. It is usually not done more than one generation then back to out breeding. I'm amazed at all the foolish answers you received and those that compare animals to humans, that is immoral.

AKC regs:
Why do you allow inbreeding and line breeding?

The relationship between the Sire and Dam of the litter has no bearing on registration eligibility. Anyone who considers breeding their dog must consider temperament, health, and finding mates that complement each other. Breeding dogs that are closely related can fix certain characteristics, both desirable and undesirable. Therefore, we would expect that only very experienced breeders would consider inbreeding and line breeding. However, there is no rule that prohibits inbreeding and line breeding; this is left to the discretion of individual breeders.

Inbreeding - The mating of two closely related dogs of the same breed.

Line breeding - The practice of mating a dog to a member of an earlier generation of the dog's bloodline.

While my breeding experience is with birds, not dogs, the same concepts apply.

Bear in mind, I have no knowledge of the regulations from the AKC, or even local animal control laws. So take this with a grain of salt.

If there is a particular trait that you want to fix in your stud (breeding group of animals), Line breeding is the most effective way to accomplish this.

In line breeding, you take the originator of the trait and breed it back with successive generations to make this a more prominant trait.

Typically, it is the male animal being bred back into the line. And typically not with direct decendants. In your friends example, rather than breed the mother back to her sons, you would breed her to her sons (or daughters) offspring, or her grandchildren.

This keeps the negative recessive traits from piling up too quickly, while maximizing the impact of the desired traits.

Eventually, this will show the effects of the diminished genetic diversity, and genetic defects will start to become apparent. hence the need to outcross, or introduce animals with no common ancestors back 7 generations.

This is how so many breeds of 'purebred' dogs commonly have genetic related ailments.

No its no longer ok. Its finished by using a super variety of breeders(BYB and intense-dollar breeders alike) and that they call it line-breeding, Its a team of crap because of the fact the breeder is purely too low value to get a clean bloodline. If the puppies come out stable they call it line-breeding--in the event that they arrive out undesirable then they call it an inbred mutt. There are motives that persons have regulations against incest (in human beings) using subject concerns that get up besides the undeniable fact that it amazes me that persons will do it with their animals each time they think of they are in a position to save a dollar. Line-breeding could make a undeniable trait greater expressed (ex. looking stress) and can be super for opposition yet years down the line is while the genetic issues start to take place.stay remote from inbred canines.

Technically yes. But you should consider a few things. First of all, they both have similar DNA, therefore the traits that weren't dominant in both the mother and son are now, because of genetics, going to become dominant. This means that diseases, mental or physical disabilities are now going to show. Next, will they even mate?! Though a dog may have much lower intelligence than a human, they still can think on their own and make decisions.

I strongly advise you to talk to a vet instead of getting the stupid responses that some people will give you here.

This is called inbreeding. You may be asking for alot of trouble!

The negative results of inbreeding may not be seen in the generation after, but maybe 2 generations after. Remember, it's the recessive genes that pass on unwanted traits.

No. Find a lesson on genetics and read it - double recessive gene expression is common in inbreeding, and is a common cause of congenital defects and genetic disease.

Please don't inbreed, it's not fair to the puppies.

called in breeding,, can be done successfully after much much much genetic studies,, professionals sometimes resort to this to try to breed out a desired trait, or the opposite,, not recommended for your friend,,, why on earth did she allow that to happen,,, encourage her to spay and neuter her pets. now she should have all those pups spayed and neutered too... EXPENSIVE MISTAKE for a lesson well learned

In my opinion, When mother and son breed, it can cause deformation. Sometimes obvious and sometimes it will cause neurological problems. There is the chance that they are completely fine. Inbreeding is where purebreds came from. Only time will tell.

Not really..its possible to have problems anytime you inbreed animals. AKC says it is ok..why I don't know.

AKC does allow inbreeding and line-breeding so you don't follow it close enough!
