My daughter got a cat who became sick within a day. She took her to the vet 4 different times for repeated tests, treatments, experiments, etc. all within a month's time. She was told that the cat would likely die, but the vet would like to try this treatment and then another, and another until more than a $600 bill was racked up. She was told that the cat was fine and she could take her home only to stay up all night with a howling cat that gradually went blind and suffered greatly until being put sleep the next morning. Of course they charged her for this service also. First we would like to have some info about what killed the cat. One diagnosis was respiratory infection. She had fever repeatedly and received more than one antibiotic. Next we want to know when the vet should have relieved both the cat and owner of the pain. I feel this was a case of cruelty to animals and abuse of a young caring pet lover.

Sounds to me like you need to find a new veterinarian. Only feline-safe antibiotics should be used, especially on sick kittens. I'm going to guess one of the antibiotics given was Baytril? This particular antibiotic commonly causes blindness in cats, and should only be used as a last resort.

And after repeated tests (I do hope she was tested for FeLV/FIP/FIV) you should have been given a diagnosis, not strung along to rack up more bucks. Sorry you were put through that =/

fevers are deadly in animals, more so than in humans. what happens when an animal gets a fever is that it can reach levels so high the fluid in the skull of the cat that protects the brain can literaly boil. antibiotics at this point would do nothing as the infection the cat had had reach levels beyond medicinal help. the average antibotic takes anywhere from 24 to 72 hours to have any effect,,and being that infections are viral antibiotics are a waste of good medicine as they are ineffective. getting back the the ethics of the vet you should have been giving two options ,,one,,have the animal euthanized or have the vet do the tests at your expense. then the option would have been for you to decide what course of action to take. veternarians do answer to a higher up, and its this board that dictactes whether or not a veternarian hospital is given its license to practice medicine. if you feel you were misinformed you can contact the veternarians society,,,not exactly sure what it is called you will need to research it. there is also the Better Business Bureau. good luck, and sorry to hear of your loss.

If it was a respiratory infection, this could've been cat flu, or any generalised infection, bacterial or viral.

It is very likely the cat was destined to die from this, but she should've either been put to sleep or the vet been straight with you about her chances long before $600 was spent. Don't go back to that vet!

Do you have a copy of the records? It would help morew to find out the truth if you did as no one can answer these general questions w/o knowing some of the facts.
You said one diagnos was. Were there different diagnosis? What kind of tets were run. This is what you have to find out.
