John 6

26Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval."

28Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?"

29Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."

It is talking about Jesus. It is saying to believe in Jesus Christ (the one he has sent) and Jesus will give you eternal life because he has God's approval to do so.

I'm no theologian...but that's what I get out of this scripture =)

Hope I helped

God Bless

Jesus was saying that He realized that many of the people who were thronging after him were there as opportunists looking for a handout & seeking only to sustain their mortal bodies. He stressed that it was the spiritual works that the people should follow, because if they sought to only fill their stomach, the world would give them that for a time but it would lead to pain and destruction. But if their motivation was to do the work of the Son of Man, they would be filled always and that work began with just Believing in Him whom the Father sent.

Sounds to me like Jesus was trying to get a following with the crowd in whatever city he was in. Considering I haven't read The Book of Mormon or The Bible in many years, I can't exactly get more background on it, but that's what it seems to boil down to.

And, just on a personal note, I put my faith in God over anything mortal any day of the week.

Very cool!

But . . . were you aware that the Greek word for "believe" is the same Greek word translated "faith"?

It's the same word stem, but with different inflected endings. Believe is a verb, faith is a noun. In English, we have no verb form for the word "faith". "Believe" is as close as we can come.

So what it actually says is "The work of God is this: to be faithful to the one he has sent".

And changing the "in" to "to" is actually a better rendering of the preposition "eis".

Amen! His grace is SUFFICIENT! We are completely content in knowing Christ Jesus, we want nothing else! (we who believe in Him) That is what God requires, our faith! Our repentence!
Food that endures for eternal life--- Jesus Christ! His word is life! And we who believe have gained eternal life in Him!
He is the only way, truth and life! -John 14:6
And indeed His grace is sufficient for me!

Jesus is asking us to invest our faith and trust in him. We're not just to concern ourselves with mere survival ("food that spoils"), but with the rich, spiritual, eternal life--inner and outer--that God promises us now and forever ("food that endures to eternal life"). To "believe in the one he [God] has sent" is to believe in Jesus as Messiah and Savior, and perhaps also to believe what he tells you.

Im not really sure, but the best way to find out is to yahoo search and type in John 6 Commentary. They will have the perfect explanation of the meanings behind this. Good Luck!

They did not want him for spiritual reasons but temporal. They were hungry so he fed them. It is the same for people who pray for physical healing, their eyes are set on temporal things but even if you get healed one day you will get sick another. Or if you eat one day you will be hungry another. So the important thing is what you do that is everlasting.

That the work of God is to believe.

To me for some it will be easy and for some it will be hard.
