Salivary glands are present through out the mouth. Sometimes one can rupture and cause inflammation of the gland, which at that point if causing any problem will be removed surgically.

I think Anne2 has the right answer. I have been having the same thing happen every now and then and I, like you, get worried every time, but before I get it checked out it goes away. This sounds like the right answer to me. Makes me feel a lot better.
