Wash the potato with water. Pierce it several times with a fork. Wrap it in aluminum foil and put in a preheated 350 F oven. Bake for one hour if it's a medium size spud, or an hour and 15 minutes if it's large.

The best baked potato

INGREDIENTS
1/4 cup olive oil
salt and pepper to taste
6 baking potatoes
1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup butter
1 cup sliced green onions, divided
1/2 cup milk
paprika to taste

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
In a small bowl combine oil, salt and pepper. Rub potato skins with oil mixture.
Bake potatoes (do not wrap in foil) in preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes, or until soft.
Remove potatoes from oven and slice skin off of the top. Scoop the flesh into a large bowl, reserving the intact skins. To the potatoes add cheese, egg, butter and half of the green onions. Mash potatoes while gradually adding milk. Spoon the mixture into the skins and top with remaining onions and paprika.
Bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Buy good big potatoes, you get ones especially for baking.

Now the lil fast way, if you just want it kinda there and then, stick it in the microwave for 10 minutes then let it stand for about 10 minutes....

But there is nothing better than a baked potatoe from the oven, cook on a medium heat, gas mark 5 for about 2 hours. Wrap the potatoe in foil. You'll know when its done by its texture, and you can slide a thin knife in it. put some country butter on it, and there ye go, a nice creamy baked spud. Damn, I am starving.

Who the hell gave me a thumbs down, speak up silent one. What was wrong with that^^^^^? I don't deserve this.:-((

Baking the Perfect Baked Potato

The perfect baked potato has crisp golden skin on the outside and is pure white and fluffy on the inside.

Any potato can be baked, but for the perfect baked potato with the desired flaky texture, it is recommended that mature, baking-type potatoes such as the Russet be used. Make sure that the skin has a nice even brown tone without a greenish cast. When baking a large amount of potatoes at one time, choose potatoes with uniform shapes and sizes; they'll cook more evenly and get done at the same time.

Adjust the rack in your oven to the middle position and preheat oven.

Rinse and scrub each potato under running water, as we will be eating the skins of these perfect potatoes. Dry each potato thoroughly.

Pierce each deeply with a fork or sharp knife four times on each side at approximately 1" intervals. This will allow steam to escape or the potato may explode during baking. NOTE: Wrapping the potato in aluminum foil will produce a soft skin, too, but technically this is steaming rather than baking (as the moisture in the potato remains trapped) and the light, flaky texture will be missing.

For a soft skin, rub the potato with olive oil or butter over the skins. Bake on racks of oven until tender. NOTE: I like to roll the potatoes in coarse salt before bake. Place coarse salt onto a small plate. Roll potatoes lightly in the salt. The skin is so yummy to eat!

Conventional or Regular Oven:
Medium-size potatoes

45 minutes at 400 degrees F.
60 minutes at 350 degrees F.
90 minutes at 325 degrees F.

Potatoes are done if tender when pierced with a fork and the internal temperature reaches 210°F. Use a meat thermometer to test for doneness. (i never bother, if the fork goes in easy its done enough for me.)

You can also test for doneness by gently squeezing the middle of the potato (using a pot holder). If it gives in easily to your touch, it is done.

A baked potato, also known as a jacket potato, is the edible result of baking a potato. Generally potatoes are baked either in a convection oven, in a microwave oven, on a grill, or on an open fire. Baked potatoes are widely popular due to their availability, ease of preparation, and filling nature.

The recommended oven temperature for baking potatoes is 350F / 175°C / Gas Mark 4. Schools are divided on whether it is better to wrap the potato in aluminum foil to retain moisture or to leave the potato unwrapped to create a crispy skin. A baked potato is fully cooked when its internal temperature reaches 210°F.

Once a potato has been baked, some people remove the skin and eat only the softer and moister interior, while others enjoy the taste and texture of the crispy skin. From a nutrition standpoint, a large percent of the vitamins, minerals, and trace elements in a potato are found within or immediately below the skin. Conversely, any remnants of pesticides, fungicides or chemical coatings left over from cultivation are likely to be found there as well.

A baking potato is an unusually large potato that is meant to only be baked.

Baked potatoes with sour cream, mushrooms, beans and cheese.American restaurants serve baked potatoes with sides (commonly referred to as fixings or toppings) such as butter, sour cream, chives, shredded cheese, and bacon bits. The British often choose to have grated cheese (often with baked beans), tuna or a variety of other fillings. A popular fast-food in Turkish cuisine, Kumpir, is based on baked potato stuffed with a variety of salads and diced vegetables.

You can make them in the oven but takes about an hour. The way I do it is to wash the potato poke it all aroung (so it does not explode) salt the outside lightly(skin on) put it on a plate in microwave for five minutes Turn it over and cook for approx another 5 until it is soft. You can make more than one at a time takes longer. Just do not forget to poke holes in it all the way around or it will explode.

Begin with firm potatoes. The elongated ones bake nicer than round ones. Scrub thoroughly with a brush, dry and rub with oil (not drippy, but slick). Place on rack in 350 oven for 45-60 minutes. Potatoes are cooked when they "give" and have no crunchiness when squeezed. Slice open and serve with butter, sour cream, cheese, etc. Most people wrap in foil which alters the fluffiness of the potato and, I think, ruins it. Remember a little salt and garlic powder sprinkled on enhances the flavor. This is making me hungry, I think I'll cook one for supper. I use my toaster oven (NEVER the microwave).

You can do this several ways. If you are short on time then nuke the potato for 3 minutes to soften. Then either put into a 400 degree oven. It depends how long it takes stick a knife if it goes all the way through its done about half an hour if soft when you microwave first.
You can grill it too if you have plenty of time you could just brush it with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Put on grill for one hour, potaotes also take one hour in the oven if they are unprepped
