It may turn out to be slightly energy neutral, but it's still 50 or more years from being a practical source of commerical power... Or perhaps never, as the same thing might have been said 50 years ago.

its doubtful. fusion takes an enormous amount of energy to produce as opposed to fission which takes a very small amount to produce (to the order of a chain reaction can be started from a single .003 eV neutron)

Probably not in its present form. But it is mostly a research tool to try to figure out how to build one that works better.
