I have heard that a sabre is an ineffective weapon, yet that the kanta is the perfect weapon for hewing off limbs. Is this true? If not a kanta then what kind of sword would be most effective at something like cutting somebody's arm off?

Hello Keyboard commander! I was unaware that a sabre was an ineffective weapon to begin with. If it is not very lethal then I do not see why it was used for centuries. May I inquire into why you wish to learn which type of bladed weapon is most effective for removing parts of the human anatomy?

This is based entirely on the skill whoever is holding the weapon. A standard sabre is actually somewhat easy to move around in a one-handed situation, along with a katana, cutlass, or the like.

This is good for quickness, but not precision. Do not misunderstand my words, those are all lethal tools in the correct hands.

If you truly desire to remove a limb from some unsuspecting individual, you can go one of two ways:
1. go big and heavy- a lance or other type of long ranged, blade-tipped object is perfect for cleaving, due to the longer swing, which exponentially increases impact force.

-and-

2.Go slim and light- a properly sharpened rapier is a devastating, almost sadisticly dangerous means of attack, especially when targeting joints and extremities.

In reference to the rapier- I witnessed a man lose 4 fingers to an UNsharpened fencing rapier . After the match, I asked my instructor how something so small could do such major damage. He removed a sharpened rapier from his car in the parking lot and proceeded to remove a 4 inch think tree branch with one swift flick of the wrist.

One handed vs two....what else needs to be said?

And the sabre is perfectly suited for its intended fighting style just like the katana. The two don't really compare. The sabre is for mounted cavalry use....the katana is for ground infantry use.

Removing limbs, a falcata would be your best bet....or an axe.

A heavier blade will have the needed inertia required for the task (dare I say) "at hand."
A chainsaw will give much greater "visual effect".

the katana is pretty much the best sword there .The sabre is used the same way, but compared to the katana,It's design is inferior.
