Stay in Central Park Area, there you have Time Square, Theater District, Fashion District, Bars, Resturants, Shopping. all in walking distance, DONT RENT A CAR!.
You will pay high dollar everytime you move that car out of the parking garage, they are no in's & out's, which means you will pay to park everytime you return to you hotel.
Every Client I send to NY, they request Central Park/ Time Square area

Well, I would have said those two things, esp. a good broadway show.Sorry. Take a house carriage ride in the park. You can also rent bikes, rent a row boat. Have your picture drawn for a great price. The most fun for us was to get on one of those tour buses because they know so much about NYC.You can get on & off all day long. Be sure & ride at night because you see alot of beautiful sights. You'll go over the Brooklynn Bridge & be able to see all of NYC. And you can get off at Little Italy. Best Italian food ever.Great bargains in China Town. You can try to be on the David Letterman Show. There is a sign on the door telling the times. Have fun!

I was going to suggest that restaurant on the river near the Brooklyn Bridge, then walk across back into the city. Maybe just walk across from Brooklyn to Manhattan and then find a nice little inexpensive restaurant in Little Italy or Chinatown. Or take the Staten Island Ferry at night.

go for a drink, then hire one of those bicycle cabs near rockerfeller center and ask them to drive you through the times square (from rock center down 7th ave) you have to do it after dark. Being a little happy (and even if you're not) and riding thru times square with all the lights around you is like a real scary disney ride, but it's real Have Fun

Visit the Village at night and eat at an exotic restuarant.

Doing it in a cab is also nice.

This webiste lists daily events that are always really fun. It's more off-beat, and unique, so it definitely gets you away from the typical tourist stuff:
