I don't think that you can run anywhere in SoCal without exercising (no pun intended) at least a small amount of caution. It's just the society we live in.

Ever thought of joining a running club?
Jogging with a friend?

I've thought of a lot of cool places, but in each case, I thought of situations where you just have to keep your eyes peeled for a dangerous situation. Creepy people know no boundaries.

Some people will laugh, some people will think I'm crazy, some people will think this is morbid. Have you considered doing your running in any of the large area cemeteries such as Rose Hills, or the Forest Lawn properties? I mean along the roadways, not over any ones grave. They are all "gated", secluded, peaceful, and reasonably safe and secure. You won't be bothered by "creepy" people there (not live ones). I know several acquaintances who do this, and they love it. Seek permission from the grounds keepers first so that park security doesn't ask you to leave.

Along the bike/jog path that runs from Palos Verdes past Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, to Santa Monica

Depending on where you are, I jog in beverly hills - there is a nice little park that follows Santa Monica from Doheny to the Wilshire intersection then head up to Carmenita and/or Elevado. Very nice, beautiful homes to gawk at, and you can go up and back on the streets for some hill workout. Have fun.

Try Runyon Canyon or the little park overlooking downtown in Echo Park (I forget the name) - there are nice trails and I've never had problems there. Or along the jog/bike path that runs along the beach in Venice/Santa Monica.

The beach from downtown Long Beach to Belmont Shore is nice. There is a paved lane in the sand and fresh air to breathe. There is a dog beach to stop and laugh at too.

Find a nice suburb in a nice neighborhood and run. Ventura County has many of them as well as along PCH on Malibu.
