My gown needed to be taken in about 3-4 inches. It cost $350 in NY.

I had the length taken up a few inches, the sides brought in slightly and it bustled, I believe the cost was right around $100 - $150 in Michigan.

The lady that altered my dress suggested bringing the length up in the back just a little bit to keep the dress just off the floor and no one would be stepping on it, I think it was some of the best advice I got through the whole planning portion of the wedding. The bustle was also done underneath, it tied to little rings under the dress so you couldn't see them and I wasn't sitting on a big bulge during dinner or anything. Very comfortable and very elegant looking, the back looked like a ball gown after the ceremony and not one person stepped on my dress with as much dancing and mingling that we did.

I had inserts put in under each arm (sounds odd, but really made a difference to the fit of the dress, and wasn't because I was big busted!), and it was under $100 on a 1K gown. It was of heavy bridal satin, and it blew my mind that you couldn't even tell that something was done to the gown! Had it done by the seamstress at the place where I bought the gown.

$100 for just the hem.... really depends on how beaded or difficult the dress is to fix.
