I enjoy both!
I started on the mountain bike, but in the past few years I've turned more roadie than dirthead. I still love to go out and hit the trails, but there is a big reason I do more road: accessibility.
To go mountain biking, I can either hit the easy trail less than a mile from my house, or I have to load my gear and drive to the trailhead, then drive back.
On the road bike, I'm on a ride the instant I roll out of my driveway, and I can get more miles in. I love riding any bicycle, honestly, so the road bike makes it easier to do more of it!
I think of the mountain bike as my fun bike; something to go play around on and get dirty for a change of pace. But the road bike is there for pure speed and endurance. fat knobbies can't hold a candle to how fast you can go on a road bike, and I can regularly top 50mph on certain downhills.
It's not what you ride, just THAT you ride that matters!

I love both. I race for a local road team, and enjoy the cameraderie, tactics, and teamwork you get with road racing. I also commute by bike and use a road bike for that.
But I love mountain biking too. I love getting out in the woods and finding mud to 'play' in. There really is no greater satisfaction than cleaning a techincal rocky section and having enough energy left over to pop it in the big chainring and blast a downhill. It's funny when I see people I know, after a fun MTB ride covered with mud, cuts, a couple of bruises, basically bleeding and dirty, with an ear to ear grin. My wife says I come home looking like a 12 year old. I've done a number of MTB races over the years and enjoy it, but it doesn't give me the feeling of inclusion i get with road racing.
For that added thrill, try cyclocross. 60 minutes of ridingand runnung a technical off-road circuit with your heart rate at your aerobic threshold for the whole time. sweeet.

Mountain! I recently just about gave up roadbiking altogether. It got so insanely boring! Mountain keeps me alert and provides obstacles and challenges that road biking doesnt.

Depends on the day and time... I like both. If you are on the fence get a hybrid...
