It means that once you die you no longer have any knowledge. The dead are in a state of inactivity. They have no thoughts, no plans, no conciousness. They have ceased to have life.

The dead return to the same state they were in before they were born. Non-existence.

The first six verses of Ecclesiastes 9 (your quote is from verse 5) deal with how the events of life effect all humanity, some in one way, some in another.
Starting in the last phrases of verse 3 Solomon relates to us that we all will die, and we know it. I would paraphrase verse 4 to say, "While we have breath (while we live), there is hope. But we can be guarded better by a live dog (living thought) than a dead lion (a once-powerful intellect)." Everyone who lives will die but we can't fathom what will happen after we die. Death comes "as a thief in the night" we don't know we're dead till we're dead. That dead body is devoid of knowledge of anything. The "worldly" things we as living souls have suffered or enjoyed here on earth will be gone; as foreign to us then as what death or the reality of the "after life" is to us now.

(Ecclesiastes 9:5) 5 For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, . . .

(Ecclesiastes 9:10) 10 All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in She′ol, the place to which you are going. (Sheol, grave, hell, pit depending on the bible you use)

(Ezekiel 18:3-4) . . .. 4 Look! All the souls—to me they belong. As the soul of the father so likewise the soul of the son—to me they belong. The soul that is sinning—it itself will die.

(John 3:16) 16 “For God loved the world so much that he gave his only-begotten Son, in order that everyone exercising faith in him might not be destroyed but have everlasting life.

The bible is very clear when you die you are destroyed, cease to exist, die.

The only hope to live again is in the resurrection.

The immortality of the soul was taught by Plato and not Jesus.
and is a variation of the lie told by Satan.

"When he told Eve: You will not die."

The living will die as we all will. In the passage you are referring to, the "dead" are the spiritually dead who don't know their Maker. They don't know they will physically AND spiritually be dead. The living know of physical death but ALSO know that Heaven awaits.

I think it means that those who have the life of God within know that this life will pass and are prepared for it, on the other hand those who deny God and His life of grace are already dead spiritually, so they will not know God in eternity.

.
Taking verse 4 into consideration, i see it as not taking a risk but another person say, for example Tami Fay Baker it could be saying that she isn't going to heaven. Yet, another could view as 'take what you can get'...

It means that the dead sleep until judgment, and while sleeping, you don't know a thing.
