The ak type weapons make great reliable guns for a day's fun at the range. In semi auto form, or rare transferable full auto versions, they are legal. In theory you could hunt with them, they do meet the requirements in most areas that allow rifles, provided they have a reduced magazine capacity.

Personally I wouldn't pick one for hunting either. I also wouldn't call it an obsession. Some of us just enjoy collecting and shooting firearms. The ak type rifles could be argued as a great icon or piece of art from the 20th century. You don't even know the half of the fun you are missing until you get the chance to shoot one these.

The true legal version of an AK 47 is called an AKS rifle. Unfortunately, many news media simply call anything with a profile similar to and AK 47 as just that. Not true. All things being considered, the two weapons are similar. The AK is select-fire and can fire fully automatic or semi-automatic. The AKS is only semi- automatic.

Many people don't distinguish between the two, henceforth, when someone says automatic, people assume it is a machine gun, when 99 percent of the time it is not.

News types don't care if they are accurate, just want ratings. Having an AK 47 in the background photos of any crime involving a firearm is common. That's how the seed is planted.

All of a sudden, any shooting is with a machine gun or " assault weapon" ( to the news media, they are the same)

Now the caliber used in those guns are ok for deer, about like a .30-.30. Other people confuse this with the SKS semi -auto rifle. This is usually referred to as a Chi-com auto rifle. Reference being Chinese made semi auto SKS rifles in the same caliber and basic design as an AK 47.

Generally the AK47 isnt used for hunting however where I live you can use the semi automatic AK to hunt as long as you are using a 5 round clip ONLY!!! I personally wouldnt use an AK to hunt with, however I do own 3 AK's 1 of which is full auto and yes i have a class 3 license. YES they are legal to own. ALWAYS check your local game and parks division and local law enforcent office if in doubt

I have a legal version of the AK...albeit a semi-automatic with a sporter stock, long barrel and a 5 round clip it's a fantastic gun for coyote hunting and very accurate even at 300 yds on open sights. Manufactured by Valley Gun of LA.

BTW, I am in New Mexico. A great place to hunt as DJ said.

Semi-auto AK-47 variants are perfectly legal in most of the civilized US. There is really no reason why one can't use them for hunting. The 7.62 x 39MM round is roughly ballistically equivalent to the .30-30 Winchester which has been taking down deer for many decades, and it is available with hunting-designed bullets. If I ever deer hunt again I intend to use my MAK-90 (a Chinese AK clone) just to prove that point.

I dont know about the AK, but the M-16's brother, the AR-15 is used for certain types of hunting. they use em for predators-mainly coyotes and bobcats. They are decent guns but pricy.

Semi-Automatic civilian versions of the Kalisnikov rifle are legal to own in the U.S. Some states and localities have put un-Constitutional laws into place to prohibit them, but for the most part Americans can and do excercise their right to own them.

The AK is the most prolific, impactful, influential, and recognizable firearm of the last half-century, surpassing the Colt 1911, the M1 Garand and certainly the AR15 (M16) in numbers produced as well as adoption and influence on the world. As was said already, just it's outline sillouette is a well know Icon in any language in any country in the world.

It is a simplified Russian design of the first true "assault rifle" which was created by the Nazis in late WWII (too late for their evil cause, thank God).

The AK is easy to make, easy to operate and easy to maintain in the field. It was designed to be used by not only the Soviets, but to help spawn Communist insurgencies worldwide. The Russians freely helped other countries under their influence make their own and also distributed millions in the Third-World.

I also thank God their the evil Soviet influence has abated from the world to a great degree, although it looks like people have short memories when it comes to Communism and genocide.

The AK coming to the U.S. in semi-auto civilian form is a windfall from winning the Cold War, so to speak.

Many so-called "experts" in America despise the simple materials and parts used in this true "People's Rifle" when compared to expensive, finely crafted firearms. They see it as inferior because it's Russian and because, due to the economies of Easten Europe, they see it as inferior because it's cheap and affordable to the average Joe.

Just as it has served the Communists well, it now also serves American target shooters and collectors in the US. It is also a very good weapon to have on hand to defend one's home and family in the event of lawlessness and civil disorder.

If you laughed at my last comment, thinking I'm an extremist of some sort, I will have you know that I had a loaded AK MAK-90 in my hands standing on the front porch of my parent's home in uptown New Orleans three days after Hurricane Katrina struck, when lawlessness ran rampant and the savages took over the streets. We evacuated my elderly parents and a few neighbors in short order and without incident that day. I credit part of that to the fact that everyone who saw me knew exactly what me and my companions had in our hands and quickly disappeared.

And to think that while all this was going on, police and national guard were disarming law-abiding Americans while the savages ran loose. Think about it.

If you think you are safe, that that couldn't happen to you, that the police will protect you, go ahead and think that way...... but please do not deny me the tools needed to protect myself and my family. I have proof that they are needed.

And yes, it is a quite adequate rifle for hunting game.

There is a lot of wrong information in these answers already and I don't want to argue, but the 7.62x39 round is an adequate hunting round for whitetail deer and smaller game like antelope and coyotes.

The AK is not an inherently accurate rifle per se, but it can be made suitably so with minor tuning. A 3 inch group 100 yards will still take down a deer without issue. You don't need a precision instrument for that. It's as good as my granddad's old .30-30 lever action deer rifle any way.

I see more and more younger hunters with AKs and SKS rifles in Texas and New Mexico where I go and I applaude them. It really pisses off the "old farts" to see them being successful with that "commie crap" rifle.

Hunting is quickly becoming an elitest sport in the US reserved for rich land owners and those who can pay a lot of money and that's sad to me, so anything that serves the people well is OK in my book.

I think you can get a legal "look-alike" AK but I doubt it'll be automatic. You can buy a gun that looks like a M-16 so why not the AK.

the first whitetail buck i ever killed was with a sks. the buck was standing about 70 yards away and with the shot he ran no more than 40 yards. i can tell you that that deer didn't give a crap if it was a 7.62x39 or any other myriad of calibers. dead is dead. if you can shoot accurately with one go for it. it's all about bullet placement. i also have a mac-90 and it will be the first gun i pick up during a home invasion.
