The water gets so gross that the bird won't drink it. And, of course, I clean it out. But sometimes I can't be at home. Does anyone know why the bird is doing this and if I can get it to stop?

Try putting the water dish up higher in the cage.It worked for me and now no more poopy in the water.If you go to a water bottle you must make sure the bird will drink from it. Birds hate change and also you must make sure the stopper dosent get clogged as no water will come out of the bottle.Good luck!

The only way I have ever been able to stop birds from pooping in their water dishes is to change them over to water bottles. It really is disgusting when they do that isn't it?

That's normal. Any bird'll do that. If you really want to stop that it's gonna take some long, serious potty training which takes most effect when the birds are babies.

Mine did that as well, but I switch over to small water bottles. They are wonderful. The water is always clean now.

You can get covers that go over the water and food bowls to prevent that kind of thing :)

My cockatiels favoriet perch is right over his water bowl so he either needs to moooove his perch,or quit shitting in the water!!

is the bowl located next to his favourite perch in the cage if so its in the perfect firing line all day long try locating the water bowl somewhere else in the cage

try puting 2 contiainers for water, or just put one of those little covers.
