In your opinion, given the state of so many of our schools, is it wiser to home school your children and avoid the mess all together- or to send your children to these schools and get involved as a parent to help make these schools better for everyone?

I know a lot of you think the schools suck, which is why I pose the question. But what can we do to make them better?
And by the way, not being able to afford to pay for private school does NOT make you a bad parent.

Public schools are bad news.
No matter what you do as a parent, your kids are still surrounded by other kids whose parents don't care enough about them to even pay for their education.
With private school at least you know that the other children in your kids' class are valuable enough to their parents' that their parents are willing to spend money on their education.

You don't get perfect apples by putting a perfect apple in a barrel of rotten apples. Home school them. I have friends in Oregon and PA who have done so - 12 kids all together. One just got a 100 per cent college scholarship. One was state champion in sport. The majority have high SAT scores. It is hard enough to raise your child without fighting the cultural Marxism which is rife in public schools. You can't change the government so what makes you think PTA membership works? BUT (Oh yes dear readers there is a but!) - if you live in Montana, Idaho East Texas etc there ARE good schools so the other alternative is you move to a community (preferably rural) where folks are still folks and know where their young ' uns are at night and the churches are full. Those schools will cause you a lot less heartache.

I was a teacher and quit because of parents complaining " you have it out for my child!". Plus I had to work for approximately 60 hours a week between teaching, lesson plans, meetings, grading, calling parents, excetera.
The pay is also crap and teachers can earn the same salary by working as a secretary for 40 hours a week and getting more respect.
THe first step is to either get teachers a secretary or to increase the pay to make it more desirable for intelligent people to go into that field.
You as a parent should try to be supportive of the teacher and offer help. I had one parent offer me help in the 2 years I had taught. It was wonderful! She had simply ran all my copies for me and it was a tremendous help.
As for home schooling, yes it is good if the parent is intelligent enough to do it or can afford a tutor. However, the child must learn how to interact with other children to be successful in life. Make certain if your child is home schooled that you join them in social and athletic activities.

I'm homeschooling, I would never send my daughter into the public school system. There are many different ways for children to interact with other children besides school. There is nothing parents can do to make them better, the school system doesn't care about our opinion. I actually know two teachers, not personally, that are pot heads.

I've seen children do wonderfully in both environments and I've seen children fail in both environments. The key is to keep in good relationship with your children and stay in tuned to what they need. Being an involved parent is the key! It sounds like you will win no matter what you chose, because you are taking primary responsiblity for your chidlren's education. They are lucky to have you as a parent

I think it is better to get involved, since lack of parental caring is one of the major problems with many schools.

The public schools suck here. That's why my kids were/are in private schools and home schooled.

Homeschooling is just a way to overshelter your kids. They get no preparation for the real world and for socializing.

get involved...home schooling cuts children off from serious social aspects such as sharing and how to be more friendly...also...if you home school your child he/she will have serious problems when they are older...either get involved or get your child out...
