I am almost 5 months pregnant. My bf turned out to be selfish, financially irresponsible and unsupportive. I tried to work it out, but he left anyway. He claimed that he wants to be a part of the baby's life, but not mine. He won't even call me back to discuss my doctor's appointments, or money he owes me. I don't think that he would hurt my baby, I just don't think he is responsible enough to care for the baby. I don't think I can prove him unfit, how else can I secure primary custody?

I would go see a lawyer, if the father is treating you that way now then he probably wont want anything to do with the baby. He wont want that responsibility. Dont ask for any child support or help from him either as part of the aggreement, then you wont have to worry about him. I am a single mom, times can be hard but you always find away. He sounds like a selfish immature man, you dont need that, neither does the baby. Most states have help available to unwed mothers, check all of that out. Get the help you need so you wont need his support at all. But go see a lawyer now, dont wait until the baby is born. I just feel since he is behaving that way now, he will sign papers to agree giving you custody just so he wont have to pay child support. Good luck and you can do it!! You will be just fine and good Mom!!!

Get a consultation with a GOOD lawyer in the field of child custody. Ask him or her all of your questions and get your answers. A GOOD lawyer will give you a free consultation and won't ask for money until he or she knows they can help you.

You can also research the child custody laws in your state and see what other grounds you hold. Know your income, have all of your plans for care and finances laid out before you get into any legal issues.

Good luck!!!

Consult a lawyer fast. But I will mention that I have friends who didn't add the father's name to the birth certificate even though they knew who he was. It meant no chance at child support without a huge fight if they ever wanted it but it also meant no dealing with custody. However, your boyfriend can fight it in court if he really wants to be a part of his child's life.
