Why do some people have the nerve to question the intelligence of another human being just because their religious/spiritual beliefs are different? And when I say "question the intelligence", I mean: Why do they imply that the other person is stupid?

I read all the time on here how "You must not have a brain", or "You must not be thinking", or "(insert religion/denomination) are stupid!"

What makes these people "stupid"? What makes them clueless? Just because they believe something different?

Why do some people have to be so self-righteous? To them, anyone who disagrees with what they think is as dumb as a rock.

First off, I am not talking strictly about Atheists or Christians or anyone. This is a general statement.

Secondly, this question is about respecting each other's beliefs, not animals rolling around in crap. :)

Okay, I think I didn't phrase my question right. This question is about religious/spiritual beliefs. Whether you are a Christian, Atheist, whatever. Not silly stuff like animals or Santa Claus.

Some people are just plain arrogant. There is no other way to describe it. The idea that you are right about everything, and especially everything important, is egotistical in the extreme.

It also denies that different people want and need different things. It's as if you decided which was the best pickup truck made, and then sneered at anyone who bought a different brand.

Come to think of it, that is what the Ford v. Chevy debate is about, isn't it? Also the Coke v. Pepsi debate, the Burger King v. McDonald's.

Different strokes for different folks is a far more realistic approach.

Personally I do not have a problem with the thoughts and perspectives of other people. I do not base my own personal beliefs on what others think anyway. I have personally asked God if he exists, and upon receipt of an answer have also received confirmation that what I believe in is what he would have me do. Accordingly, I go about trying to make the world a little bit better place by helping, serving others, and trying to be altruistic. It works for me and my conscientious and I feel it is what God wants me to do. Additionally, my beliefs bring joy and happiness to me and my family.

Since you didn't specify *lack of beliefs*, I truly hope you're not implying that this is an "atheist thing"(?) ...
*WD-40: atheists are dumb
*Star: Atheists are not intelligent
*Maurice H: Do atheist not like to think?
*fiddich59: Question for foolish and misguided atheists?
*Jinxmchue001: You can become stupider by becoming an atheist.
*Infamous: (Re Atheists) People seem to enjoy a life with no objectivity

[Edit]: Re Add Dtls. But your "God" *IS* as silly as Santa. Truly, do you not see that (maybe not agree with it, but see it)???

People resort to name calling when they are unable to come up with a rational response to an argument. I think that the person calling the names is usually saying a lot about themself. By the way, everyone, including me, is guilty of this at times.

The thing they have in common is that they are reacting to superstitions. Not all superstitions involve black cats or the tooth fairy.

However, all superstitions are based on fancy, not fact, and therefore, to believe in them makes a person "stupid" by default.

Wouldn't you question the intelligence of an adult who devoted his/her life to the worship of santa claus?

Part of it is a simple lack of class and manners.

Hmmm, maybe that's all of it.

We all have our beliefs. How dare you believe that "some people" are self-righteous?
