It use to be "United We Stand, Divided We Fall"
And that is true, but today we are so divided with so many beliefs of God (or non-belief), War, Immigration, etc.
How do we come together as Americans to defeat our enemies and stand United to protect our Country?

The concept of a "united America" is a myth. In general people in this country have always had strong differences of opinion and banded behind what they thought was the right position on whatever the key issues of the time were. Right after independence there was a sharp division between the Federalists (who wanted strong central government, a central bank, a professional army, etc.) and the Republicans (who wanted a decentralized society run by regular meetings of farmers and land owners, little or no interference from the central government, and who saw the concepts of a central bank an a standing army with suspicion) If you want an example of "a country divided" look for some of the political writings of the day. Later on there were divisions over many other issues, including the biggest which was slavery, and which drove the nation into a civil war (I would argue this was the only time the nation was truly divided). At the turn of the 20th century there were sharp divisions over the role of the U.S. in the world stage (internationalists vs. isolationists). During the 30's there were sharp divisions on how to handle the wave of poor people driven into cities by the great depression. More recently there were the divisions of the 60's driven by the counterculture movement and exacerbated by Vietnam; the 70's by Watergate; the 80's by supply side economics and welfare; the 90's by environmental issues, Bill Clinton, etc. War (almost every one), God (prohibition, Irish immigration, scopes monkey trial), and immigration (from China and western Europe in the second half of the 1800's; from Eastern Europe in the first part of the 1900's; and from Latin America most recently); have many times divided public opinion. This is all part of living in a democracy where everyone who has an opinion is free to express it. The beauty is that whenever the going has gotten really tough, the country has banded together to achieve common goals. This happened during WWI and WW2; during the British invasions in 1812; and for a short period right after 911. I think it's wrong though to say the country is divided. People are divided in their opinions, which is a sign of a healthy democracy. But that is not the same as the country being divided. Regardless of how dire it seems, an overwhelming majority of people in this country believe in and are fully behind the basic tenants of American democracy and the American system.

unfortunately we as a nation have fallen into the trap our very first president george washington warned us about in his farewell address; not to place the party or the personalities above the nation and its crucial interests to not just survive, but thrive.

Today's US political landscape has people more worried about the party than the issues or the candidates themselves. Too many people will vote for a 'bad democrat' to avoid voting republican or vice versa. The major parties keep telling us what they are against and less often what they are for. People seem to be voting more often as rejectionists, against a candidate because they don't like that candidates stand on a certain issue. This is highly detrimental to the long term issues we face as a nation.

It is time for the people to retake control of their nation. We are a government for the people, by the people. It is time the American citizenry exercise their revolutionary tendency by voting at the ballot box, not for a party, but for the best candidate, the best ideas and the best for our great nation. It is time to vote for the crucial issues are country faces, the best candidate (not a certain party) and the best solutions.

I already exercised my opinion and future vote by joining unity08.com and highly recommend others in our nation look into it as an option to undermine the special interests in favor of the national interests.

Stop focusing on that either/or "wedge" issues that don't have solutions (abortion, euthanasia, gay marriage) and have nothing to do with effective governing. Lets look for common issues that both parties have interest in (immigration standardization, fiscal responsibility, national security, and education reform), where the two parties can work together and find common ground.

There is no way. Today America is filled with ifferent ethnic groups and cultures. People have perspectives that will differ from the perspective of someone else. Common resolutions and compromises can't really help, because people want their way or the highway. It's very complicated.

Our Constitution united us because we all abided by it. Notice I put that statement in past tense. Today our government committed the highest form of treason against our citizens and spat on our Constitution. There will be no unity as long as the laws are not enforced equally.

It is nearly impossible to get everyone to agree on any one issue. There are too many differences in people in general and most have to do with money being thrown their way. It's a scandal when we can even agree on what a scandal really is!

Remove the corrupt politicians and take back our country. Then and only then will we be united as a country. Until then, we are sunk in this mosh-pit and ruled by the fat cats who reside in Washington and those that can buy the fat cats in Washington.
