You need to be very organized and throw out anything that you don't use right away. Don't let anything just sit around.

I lived small space before. This will sound funny, but buy small things! I collected small salt and pepper shakers to decorate the tiny kitchen windowsill. Put up mirrors instead of pictures. Light colors on the walls. Here are some other things I tried to do. Have a garage sale. Sell your clothes to consignment stores. Resist yard sales or thrift stores. Don't go to Target or Wal Mart, you know you will need stuff if you do! Donate books and magazines. Basically, live like a backpacker. If you carry it in, carry it out. If you have to have that new chair, donate the old one. There are so many good places to donate on the internet that help people.

My place was also getting full of clutter. I realized that if I kept bringing things in and hardly ever took anything out, then one day there wouldn't be room for me. I have stopped buying anything that I don't need right now. I also try to get rid of five things every week. slow, but working. A great incentive is to clear away an area that really bugs you. It just feels so much better to be in that area that you actually want to clear away some more.

Go through everything and get rid of what you don't need/use, get organized by having a place for everything and keep to that plan- always put things away in their place, keep order to the things you bring in like mail, new purchases etc. so they dont clutter your space and take over your life.

Somebody needs to be a "clutter cop" in the household.
If you are alone it needs to be you.
A clutter cop is ruthless about ridding their home of everything that is not essential.
I'm a dyed-in-the-wool packrat who lives with a clutter cop.
He makes both of our lives easier by forcing me to address my packrat tendencies every day in every way.
I can't tell you how much happier I am in life now that I have shed all the possessions.
Try it.
