Keep in mind that the Christian concept of God hails from 2 millennium ago, when the world was sparsely populated.

At that time, the singular lifestyle was unthinkable. One married and had children so that they would be looked after in their old age, when they were too old and ill to do so for themselves. Having large families was seen as grace from God, as it meant some security in a time when social welfare was nonexistent.

This is the reason homosexuality is an "abomination" unto God: when the Bible was being created, to be childless, and therefore defenseless in one's old age, was considered a great tragedy. Nothing that promoted childlessness could be endorsed, as it meant that when old and alone, the individual would be a "drain" on their fragile society.

Similarly, when ancient man noticed that those who ate pork fell ill with trichinosis, the made the eating of pork taboo. They didn't understand the etiology of the disease, so all pork became "off limits."

The teachings of the Bible are genuinely instructions for living, as best understood by ancient people. The simply couldn't fathom or anticipate that men and society would change in fundamental ways.

The planet isn't overpopulated, it could actually support a lot more people. It's just that because of human greed and sin, the distribution of it's resources is uneven. The west wastes millions of dollars worth of food every year while some places struggle to have any. It's not God's blessing on our multiplication that's the problem, it's human greed.

First of all, nobody knows what god wants. The bible was written by men, and it's all fiction anyway. But, the only reason any species is on the planet is to reproduce and keep the species going. That's pretty much it.
Meanwhile, you have a large, organized Church--the Catholic church--which will have its leader, the Pope, stand in a country full of people dying of starvation or AIDs and tell them it is a sin to use condoms. This is all about numbers and power--the more members a church has, the more power it has.

LOL.
I always saw the need for the religious command to have as many babies as possible as linked to basically having more members to count towards your religion. Almost like a race.

Actually, He only told that to Adam and Eve. Seeing as they were the only two people alive at the time, I'm glad He did.

To be fruitful & multiply is a foundational principle. That is planting seed and it grows & makes new seeds.

It is also written that we reap what we sow. Give & it will be given back to you. If we sow love, we reap love. If we sow hate, we reap hate. If we sow faith, we reap faith. If we sow doubt, we reap doubt. If we sow peace, we reap peace. If we sow fear, we reap fear. If we sow into a ministry, we reap from that ministry. So. It is a Godly principle.

And I am not worried about overpopulation. God isn't going to give us new instructions.
