If your asthma prevents you from performing regular physical exercise, then yes, it is a closed deal. But, if it's not bad and does not bother you, you can slip by. I know people who came in with asthma but it wasn't a real big issue with them and they got in because they just didn't tell anyone they had it. If someone asks, say you don't have it ONLY IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A SERIOUS CASE OF IT. MEPS does not do a breathing test and they will not find out no matter what they say. After you are in and through basic, perhaps your asthma flares up. Thats fine, you can get a waiver to stay in and the military will make sure you get your inhaler and what not for it. Let me just say that I am in no way saying you should do any of this. If you truely want to serve your country and your condition is not serious, this is just an option.

I was in Marine Boot Camp, and I met a lot of people who were separated for asthma, mostly recently discovered. They have the option to reenlist; they just need to get waivers.

Asthma is a very common problem many people discover while in training, but some get back in within a few months. I even knew someone who had a heart murmur; it took him 8 years to get back but he managed.

Just remember, if your recruiter tells you that you will be disqualified for life if you say anything don't believe it. If the guys mentioned above can get in, so can you. Just remember, don't give up. It won't be easy, but there is always someone who can help you, and if you can pass the initial physical with it they should let you back in.

Good luck.

I believe it's a closed deal ! None of the armed services take volunteers with asthma. The problem for them is, you will never go away once they accept your services. The asthma will then belong to the Pentagon, and it is not in the market for more patients than it already has .

Asthma diagnosed after age 12 is a disqualifier. Don't know if it's waiverable, so ask a recruiter.

I used to be a recruiters assistant and I remember that Asthma was out of the question.

Let me try and answer: I am not trying to burst your bubble but under control means like you never had it or will never have to use an inhaler again.. I doubt that will happen......will it. Your not allowed to go to basic with any of that, if you disclose to the recruiter that you had it or have it your permantely disqualified from military service. Good Luck.

Call an armed forces entrance station and ask someone there from the medical entrance units.

I am so sorry, but why would you want to join anymore??? They don't care, you're just a number - and the recruiters will lie, they will lie to you until they are blue in the face!

Trust me, you don't want to do it!
