to check timing go to your nearest Advanced Autoparts, Autozone. or pep boys wat ever auto parts store you have near you. they should have a type of "gun" that is basicaly a strobe light that you shine on your belt that will have a certain mark and with the light there will be a certain point that it will line up at and you just adjust it with that.

(1) Locate and ground out the carburetor switch idle stop contact with a suitable jumper wire.
(2) Disconnect and plug the vacuum lines at the vacuum transducer on the SCC and the air switching valve on the emissions air pump.
Adjust the idle RPM to that on the VECI label after the engine is warmed to operating temperature and adjust timing just as you would on an engine that is not computer controlled.

You need to disconnect the coolant temperature sensor. This effectively keeps the computer from adjusting the timing while you're trying to set it. I'm assuming you've already got a timing light...
