1.I'd replace Lee with Sherman, I don't wanna hear about what he woulda done or what he coulda done...he lost. He knew he didn't have the industry before they went to war, plan accordingly, that's a cop out.

2.I think Andrew Jackson was a far better general than ole Jeb, although Jeb was good too.

3. McAuthur, he's not in the top five. I'd replace him with none other than George Washignton. McAuthur allowed himself to get sucker punched by the Chinese and there is no way that should have happened. Had he not had such a large ego, we would not be dealing with this N. Korean problem today, so No, he is not in the top five.

Here are some that don't make the headlines since the we the fighting commanders with line units during the wars.

1. Chesty Puller... One of the ground commanders at Chosin Reservoir. Attacked while retreating from from the Chinese. Made General afterwards. One hell of a commander.

2. Creighton Abrams... Commander of the 37th Armor Battalion during WWII. Was the lead unit in the push to rescue the city of Bastogne France during the Battle of the Bulge. Eventually, became the Army CoS.

3. Frank Merrill of Merrill's Mauraders fame. Outnumbered by the men of the Japanese 18th division but caused heavy casualties. They harassed supply and communication lines and cut off the Japanese rear at Maingkwan.
The Mauraders had advanced 750 miles and fought in 5 major engagements & 32 skirmishes with the Japanese Army.

4. Joshua Chamberlain. Colonel of the 20th Maine Rgmt at the Battle of Gettysburg. Saved the Union by holding off 3 assults by the Southern forces and while nearly out of ammo made the command decision to attack with a bayonet charge on the final Rebel assult. The charge shocked the south so badly that they retreated and were not able to muster another attack. Receipient of the Medal of Honor. Eventually became a Union Army General later in the Civil War.

5. Not enough time to research but will throw out Hal Moore of We were Soldiers fame.

Ike; best organizer.
Lee; most effective with inferior supplies and degraded troop levels
Patton; simply the best combat tactician of all time in modern warfare
Grant; re constructed a total disaster in the US Army, created an effective and aggressive force
Washington; just did the impossible with almost nothing to work with
