The bible is one of the oldest know writings. However over the years it as been translated from one language to the next and those doing the translating very well could have changed the original text and meaning. We can't be 100% for sure really.
You could look at it as a history book, that all depends on how attached you are to religion. Some would just flip over this though.
I was taught that if you want to keep your friends never discuss politics and religion. Many people are too heated about either subject and people can come up with many different opinions about both. But here it is a good question, just don't be surprised is you get lots of hate mail about it.

The bible is merely the spiritual guidance to those who believe what is between the covers. You can find facts weaved into it but not enough to treat it as a "history" book. It is an elaborate tale spun by hundreds of people trying to give hope and understanding to future generations. The authors are trying to explain the unexplainable and use vivid tales to speak on the subject. People love the story and have lived by it for so long they believe it to be the beginning of the church. Which might I add ruled the government during the times it was written. Used as a ploy to keep people at bay and make sure they thought about their actions prior to making them otherwise they would not be following "The book" which was "The Law". Hope this helps you find within yourself if it is indeed a spiritual book or just a wonderful story.

If it is a history book, then won't the events within it be historically true?
What stuff has been removed from it? The text has not changed as far back the manuscripts of it go. Which in the case of the New Testament is less then 20 years after it was authored.
How could it have been more true 1600 years ago? Does truth change? Is what happened 2000 years ago different then it was 1600 years ago?
I am not following your logics....sorry!!

Hello Silly....:
In my "Bible as History" class we were spoon-fed the theory of scriptural evolution. That would be like someone finding literary fragments of the Book of Mormon four-tousand years from now, and offering theories that it is part of the Bible.
Actually, Israel split into two territories, with the Northern Kingdom deviating from the writings of Moses and blending their thoughts as suggested by their false prophets. So, one would be really surprised is they did not find some scriptures modified to "appease" their perversions of scripture.
Your “Silly” statement that much has been removed is not factual. The scriptures found in the Dead Sea Scrolls are almost verbatim with existing manuscripts. And quotations found in available first-century sermons match the Bible.
What was actually removed was some uninspired chapters found in the Greek Septuagint. The Jews never considered them inspired, the Protestant Bibles had them until the late 1700's, but they are still included in the Catholic and Anglican Bible--kind of dangerous because one might think it is God speaking to them when it is just journalism.
The equal-skip Bible code only works on one Hebrew document, and if one letter is taken out, the whole system fails. That tells me God has protected His word.
God was fully aware that "followers" would pervert His Word, so He hid a Bible code to be released at the end of history. Select: www.revelado.org/revealed.htm
Certainly hope you learn to trust His Bible, there is much to learn and forget.
Blessings, One-Way

New Testament = 2000 years ago, Old Testament is older. The Bible is a Historical account of the Israelites in the Old Testament, as well as a book of Prophecy, of which some prophecies have been filled, others are yet to come. The entire Bible also is God's law, a book on how we should live our life. The New Testament is an account of our Savior Jesus Christ's life as well as more prophecy to come and a confirmation of law and how to live our life. It is the handbook on life, both earthly and eternally.
Madybe you are just not understanding the scripture and that is why you get nothing from it. Pray for guidance and knowledge to understand. More importantly, if you are not forgiven and have not received salvation from Christ Jesus, pray for that!!!

It's just an old book that was written a long time ago, and although some of it might have historical context lots of it is made up. But that doesn't mean you can't find inspiration from it or that it can't make you think about yourself as a person. Just think of it like Buddha's teachings or Shakespeare.

It is not even a history book, as much of the action related therein is fictitious. It should simply be treated as a work of fiction, which has had more influence on civilization than it deserves.

The Bible is more than a History Book, it is the Word of God. It teaches us how to receive God's salvation through Jesus His Son.

In order to qualify as a history book the stuff in it needs to have actually happened, which has been a subject of debate for generations. Maybe we should just consider it a good solid basis for leading ones life and leave it at that.

The Bible does contain history as well as letters, poetry, and prophecy. It is the living Word of God.
All of the biblical prophecy that has been fulfilled to date has been 100% accurate. (does that help with how you look at it?)
God's Word is true.
