Darwin did believe in evolution. There was a direct lie spread by the evangelist Lady Elizabeth Hope, where she claimed to have visited his deathbed where he renounced his theory. The trouble is that she was never really there.

According to the people who were really present she never showed up and he never denounced or lacked belief or converted to anything. According to his daughter: "I was present at his deathbed ... He never recanted any of his scientific views, either then or earlier."
