Try this remedy -- it is all natural and easy to use, and works.
Take a BIG fat lemon (the more rind the better) and slice it paper thin. Put in a bowl with a tablespoon of crushed rosemary leaves (or a 6 inch sprig of fresh). Pour a quart of hot, near boiling water over it all. Let steep overnight. Strain and put into a large spray bottle. Keep in fridge. Shake well before applying.
The d-lemeone in this spray along with the rosemary oil will give
your dog a beautiful shiny coat and keep fleas and other bugs away .. including mosquitoes, so you get extra heartworm protection. If your dog has dry skin or allergies add a teaspoon of tea tree oil and a tablespoon of Aloe pulp.
Use the spray at least twice a week to keep the scent on the coat to repel bugs, and spray it around your doors and through the carpets. If it's a bad flea time, spray daily on the belly and feet to repel them.
Good luck

Take them to a local groomer and have them dipped this will kill anything that is on them, however it is not a preventive. Then while they are at the vet get a yard treatment for fleas and ticks from Wal-Mart and spread it all over the yard and also you may want to use a pesticide bomb inside your house because more than likely they are in your house as well. The only think that you absolutely need the vet for is making sure that you're dogs don't have any worms. If they do they can be passed on to you or your children. Dogs having worms is a very easy problem to fix especially if they were caused by a flea or a tick.

Buy the "pricey stuff" at a local store or online instead!
My vets charge quite a premium on Frontline.
I purchase it at my local pet supply.
I had purchased some on E bay, but I then read that there is so much counterfit product out there. (and not just on e bay)
Honestly it is cheaper to keep the fleas off your pet then to get rid of them after the fact.
Once they get on your pet they then get into the environment.
Total control then involves the home, the yard, and of course the pet.
Using cheaper products is really a false economy.

The cheap stuff is more toxic to you and your dog and doesn't work. Stick with Frontline Plus, Advantage or Revolution and use them religiously. Good stuff that works always costs more. Besides you'll spend a fortune treating and retreating your dog with the cheap stuff that doesn't work. You don't have to buy it at the vet. Most pet stores have it.
Some dogs become ill eating garlic or can be allergic to it. And it doesn't work.

Once you get the fleas killed off in the house and off the dog use a monthly spot on preventative.
The key here is preventative.
I use Bio Spot from one of the pet supply catalogs I can get 6 months of it for about $20 for a 60 pound or larger dog.
I have used it for the last 10 years. I have not had any fleas in those years.
I have ticks on the dogs at times but they are always dead when we take them off. I see very few on the dog but thse that are are dead.

Do NOT use products like Hartz, Adams, Sargents, Zodiac, Bio-Spot and other OTC products..they are a waste of money, usually not all that effective but worst of all they can be VERY toxic ot your dog..they can cause serious skin reactions at the site of application, burns, neurological issues, seizures and death. I can't tell you the number of dogs (and cats) we see yearly that have very serious problems associated with these products. These products all contain very concentrated pesticides that aren't safe for use on your pet or around your family.
Also be advised that Frontline & Advantage bought from on line, pet stores etc aren't guaranteed by the manufacturer and aren't even sold to these places by the manufacturer. Bayer (maker of Advantage) and Merial (maker of Frontline) ONLY sell their products to licensed vets.
Don't buy cheap..get the safe product from your vet..it just might safe your pets life.

My dog is allergic to frontline we use bio spot about 20-30$ for a 3 month supply! Never a problem with fleas or ticks
If your dog is already infeasted than make sure you look for one like frontline plus that will kill the eggs!

You get what you pay for. Over the counter doesn't work and is very toxic to your dog.
Don't get your flea medicine on Ebay because people have been busted for selling counterfeit Frontline on there.
Advantage, Frontline, etc. Look on-line to see what best suits your needs.

biospot works good and it isnt quite as pricey as some of the other products out there. also you can order a pill called Capstar and it kills all the fleas on the dogs within 24 hours use this then put the biospot on and you should see a big difference.
i usually order from www.1800petmeds.com because they have good prices and fast priority mail shipping.

Though it may be a bit expensive at the vet is your dog worth it? I use to use Revolution (has HW meds in it), but switched to Advantix (has mosquito repellant, but still give a pill for HW). Go to like petmeds.com or something similar. The price is still up there but may be cheaper than your vets
