Some churches believe that you have to tarry for months to receive the Holy Spirit. Is it not true that he is with you even before salvation? To my understanding, he was the one that compelled us to come to Christ. If this ist rue, he is already with us. Do we just receive him by faith?

I only see once in the scriptures where they "tarried" (old English word for "waited") for the Holy Spirit. That was in the 10 days between Jesus' Ascencion and the Day of Pentecost.

Pentecost was a Jewish festival 50 days after the Passover which celebrated the bring of the first of a person's harvest to God. So it was on the day (as a fulfillment of the original feast) that God product the first harvest for his church, by pouring out the Holy Spirit and bringing 3000 converts.

The reason they had to "wait", was because they was the day when it first began. Before that no one had ever received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. They had to wait until the day when it all began to come.

After that, however, there is not a single case in which people did not immediately receive the Holy Spirit.

I believe the Holy Spirit burdens our heart to come to Christ and that we receive the Holy Spirit within us by faith when we ask Christ into our hearts. I also believe the Holy Spirit helps us develop the gifts God has placed in us so that we are able to be effective witnesses to others, and that not everybody shares the same gifts. He prompts us in the way we should walk to best serve the Lord.

The Holy Spirit is the one who acts in our hearts to cause us to come to Christ. No one can come unless the Spirit has called him. At the moment of conversion, the Spirit begins to indwell the believer, initiating a lifelong process of sanctification.

He quickens (or makes one alive) one to repentance then resides within you. He chose us.

This happens immediately.

If you had to tarry or work to receive Him that would credit ourselves instead of glorifying God with His amazing grace.
