Do you have to be married a certain amount of time to do this or go through some kind of hardship? Just curious.

People renew vows for all kinds of reasons - to celebrate a victory over a huge problem (illness, infidelity etc.) to celebrate a spouse's one's return (like from Iraq) to celebrate a milestone anniversary (25th, 50th etc.) or just to celebrate the fact that they love each other and truly would "marry him/her all over again if I had the chance..."

I know one couple - long married - who renew their vows every year on their anniversary - the whole church thing and cake and punch afterwards. It's really quite lovely. I think it will be 47 years this year.

It used to be that couples would do this on their 25th anniversary, have a ceremony to renew their vows, then have a small party with family and close friends to celebrate.
Recently, more couples are getting this done at the 10th anniversary.
Usually, I think in the majority of cases it is simply a re-affirmation of the vows and love. Sometimes, yes, it is done if the couples have been through problems, and feel they need that same re-affirmation to remind themselves of why they are together.
However, what renewal of wedding vows is NOT - is "another" wedding!

Its usually standard to renew wedding vows at the twentieth plus anniversaries, though you don't have to wait that long to do it. I think its just a nice way to re affirm the vows you have spoken to one another, in front of those you love once more. Its a nice way of bringing some romance and freshness to the marriage, the feeling of being back at the beginning of such an amazing journey. Its a beautiful gesture.

In many circles, you ONLY have a renewal if there has been a rough spot in the marriage and you're overcoming it, and it's a modest, close-family-only affair.

These days, some people are being very tacky and using it as a way to have a fancier wedding than their original one (which disrespects their original vows!), or to get more gifts, or in general to make a spectacle of themselves, because they are vain.

People renew their vows for many reasons, mostly because they want to show that they love and are still committed to each other. Not just because of hard times or length of time.

i almost asked this the other day. i don't get why people do it either. It seems silly to me. I have been married for 27 years and still love my hubby but i have never thought of doing this.

Greed- a lot of people do them just to get gifts. Sad as it is...... Or they want a redo because their wedding day wasn't good enough- greed and selfish.
