I used to say I had died or pretend I was my gay lover and go into a spat I was having with myself.

Lately, I ask where they are calling from. If they are here in the US, I say I'm surprised there job hasn't been sent to India. One woman laughed and said, "It's going at the end of the month."

If they are in India, I ask how much they make, not to be mean or anything, just to find out. Apparently, they are told not to say.

I would always tell them the person they are looking for was killed in some weird way and I would put effort into it, and they would always pause for a second or two to take it in. But being the co*ksuckers that collections people really are they would almost always ask for a family contact so they can deal with the debt in question. Most of these people are overseas thanks to outsourcing, that alone should say something about our country, these american companies dont even want to pay real americans to hound us for the money we owe. Maybe this is a reason why some dont pay their bills, they lost their job to the person on the other end of the phoneline.

I leave them on hold and check back every few minutes. You'd be surprised at how far they'd go to get the sale.

Sometimes I'll say, "You know, I was just about to call you but I can't talk right now. I'll call you back later"

And sometimes I pretend I need a job and ask if they're hiring.

tell them they called a payphone in a mental institution. they know they won't get any money so they'll make sure they'll take the number off of the list. Lol. I used to be a telemarketer and the lady was interested and later in the day, the sale came back that i called an institution and didn't get the sale.

i tell them that my kids are selling whatever for school - magazine subscriptions, candy bars, whatever - and that if they will buy whatever my kids are pushing, I'll buy from them.

Or when they say "how are you today?" I launch into a long, drawn out, very graphic story about my "ailments": how bad my 'rhoids are, this diarherra has been going on for a couple of days now, how thick my mucus is, what ever sounds totally gross and disgusting. They suddenly don't want to talk to me ...

Yes if you gave them the number. You should pay your bills anyway or you might end up with no cell phone either.

i know it might seem like we planned this, my dad answered the phone, "City Morgue: You stab them, we slab them'
needless to say the person hung up the phone,

also try "Joe's Pool Hall" "Eight ball speaking"
it just annoys people and if they are a friend or relative they will know what you are doing
plus it is fun to do

Put them on hold, every 15 minutes or so pick up the phone and ask them, "are you still there? hold please". Its great (I once kept one for 1 hour!) and during that time they are not calling anyone else.

I pretend my lady is "servicing" me while I'm talking. That always makes the caller's day.
