Nicotine is an appetite suppressant, so you may gain some weight. But, unless you let it get way out of control, you shouldn't gain a lot.

But if you don't want to quit because you are afraid of gaining weight, think about this: Which do you think is better, kissing someone that just gained 10 lbs or kissing someone that smells like an ashtray?

Stopped smoking this year and gained 30 pounds. However, I would have it no other way. I am so glad that I have stopped, however, I still have cravings from time to time. The weight is slowly coming off as I jog 4-5 times a week.

Stop smoking. It is not work the weight.

I'm a smoker and yes you will put a little weight on, I've been smoking for over 30 years and believe you me trying to stop after that length of time is very hard, if you have been smoking for 9 months then PLEASE PLEASE stop, I really wish I had never started, I do have to stop due to health problems and it is not going to be easy, with healthy eating and exercise you can loose weight if you need to only do stop smoking the health risk are far too high.

You will likely gain weight unless you are aware of the function that smoking has had in your life. Not only does it soothe stress/anxiety, smoking gives you an oral fix. There are other ways to meet this same oral craving that don't involve ingesting more calories, such as talking, chewing gum or sucking on ice chips, kissing (!!!). And a fundamental question I ask people to consider (I'm a psychotherapist and yoga instructor): what are you hungry for? If it is food -- eat when you're hungry. If it isn't food -- don't eat when you're not hungry. Figure out what you're really hungry for -- i.e. company, work, exercise, friendship, activity, sleep, and listen to your body's real needs. Cessation of smoking does not need to equate to extra pounds (unless you have a health condition in which you need to gain some weight, such as anorexia nervosa, cancer, etc).

Well Smoking curbs your appetite IMHO.So i would say you will eat more if you quit smoking...So yes you will gain weight. I'm not advocating smoking to keep you're weight down. To counteract the increased appetite and food you eat, you can exercise more and you will be fitter for giving up smoking to allow you to do this. I'm a smoker myself and i know if i stopped and maintained my present level of exercise i would gain weight

people often eat more when they quit smoking because they feel an empty feeling inside - this is the withdrawal of nicotine - it's only a mild feeling but hey - any excuse to eat huh! and then, like many things it just becomes a habit. why on earth are you smoking? stop immediately ! most people in the long run lose weight when they quit smoking because you feel so much healthier (and your life isn't being ruled by cigs) you do more exercise

It really depends on how strong your willpower is. I know of someone who did stop smoking & put on a lot of weight - but only because she was substituting cigarettes for sweets, therefore everytime she craved nicotine, she ate instead.

Not really an effective way to stop smoking though, as she simply replaced one addiction with another.

As long as you continue to watch what you eat, I'm sure you'll be fine.

you will only gain weight because you will be constantly picking at food instead of having a cigarette. you will be swapping one bad habit for another. after a few weeks this will settle down and you wont put any more weight on. i put on 10lbs at first but now I've stopped the picking I've lost it again. giving up smoking is THE BEST thing you can do for your health. i gave up at christmas after smoking for 23 years and i definatley feel much better for it.
