There's no official name "Jap Fancey (Fancy) Cakes". But there IS such a thing as a Jap Cake .

It's an almond flavored meringuey biscuit with a chocolate filling.

Here's a page with some recipes. I have a feeling there's no real origin to the name. Probably a Japanese dessert simply called a "cake".

I tried to Google the name and came up with some interesting things except for a cake! Perhaps you can ask the person you purchased the cake from how it got its controversial name!

I'll bet it's called a Japanese Fancy and you bought it at a bakery run by some old codger who still says Jap.
