Okay, I suffer from a mental condition called depersonalization, which you probably haven't heard of. It's a stress related disorder that makes me feel like I'm in a dream. I've done a lot of research on it, and if I want this to go away, I believe that I need to see a therapist. Problem is, I don't know how to tell my mother. I'm only 15 and my mom doesn't like for people to show weakness. I'm afraid to tell her. What should I do?

My father isn't in the picture, and I don't know how to contact him. I would love to go to a councilor, but I'm homeschooled. I'm not very close to any of my family members, other than my immediate family. Thank you all so much for your help, I really appreciate it.

Sit your mother down and tell her that you feel a therapist will help you with your disorder. I've been on medication for the same kind of condition and therapy will help you. If you need someone else to talk to her then email me at mlbx55@hotmail.com and I will help you convince her. I am a parent myself of two sons and two daughters. I have a daughter your age myself. If you just need someone to talk to, feel free to write. Put yahoo answers friend in the subject line so I don't delete it.

Suffering from a mental illness is not a weakness. If you really feel the need to talk to a therapist then you possess insight into your problems and a desire to feel better.
I also had to tell my mother I needed a therapist. I said that I did not feel normal and I was unable to resolve the problem by myself. I felt I really needed a psych professional to help me feel better.
She agreed and took me to a psychologist. I was seventeen.
If your mother truly cares for you she would not want you to suffer.

First of all I'd be careful about diagnosing yourself. You don't have the education to make an accurate one no matter how much you've read on line.
Just tell your mom straight out that you've been feeling... add symptoms here... and you'd like to see a physician. A physician will be able to tell you if what you're experiencing is or is not a physical thing. If it's not a physical thing s/he may be able to convince your mother about therapy.

Sit her down and tell her that you think you need help and you'd like to see a therapist for it. If she's one of those parents who will flip out at you for that, maybe you can talk to your school guidance counselor and schedule a meeting with you, your mom, and the counselor. That way someone is there to back you up and talk to your mom about what therapy is and how it would benefit you. Good luck!

It sounds like you could have a problem talking to your mom, but I think you should try it. Make her "feel" exactly how you feel; be detailed.
If you run into a roadblock with your mom, talk to your school counselor. Any school counselor who graduated after the mid 80s has had some training in mental health and know how to get students mental health help.

Sounds like your mother may be contributing to your depersonalization tendencies. It's great that you have decided to seek help and no matter what, you should not feel like you are weak! Getting help is THE STRONG thing to do ...also the most responsible thing. You are already showing a great strength by admitting that you need help. SO EXPLAIN this to your mother and if you have any more questions, please e-mail me:

Your not weak you have a condition.... Write her a letter... You shouldn't have to tell her you are scared the fact that you are writing it should show her. Good luck! At least you know you have a problem and need help. Some people can't even admit they have problem. You will get some help I hope and you'll be just fine! ;)

Sadly not showing weakness IS a weakness in itself. Just my oppion there. In many states you can see a therapist without your parents consent. I don't know where you live, but you could try to set up times to see a therapist around your schedule.

The worst thing you can do it not to tell her. What parent gets mad at there child b/c they want to seek help. Just tell her. This is not a weakness.

HELLO LITTLEMOOCHILD,
IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT IF YOU SHOW A WEAK STATE OF MIND. IF YOU CANNOT TALK TO YOUR OWN MOTHER TALK TO A SCHOOL NURSE OR COUNSELOR BECAUSE YOUR MOTHER HAS A BIASED VIEWPOINT AND MA NOT BELIEVE YOU OR TAKE YOU SERIOUSLY. YOU NEED TO SPEAK WITH SOMEONE QUALIFIED TO HELP YOU. TALK TO YOUR MOM FIRST AND DON'T TRY TO PLAY ANY MIND GAMES, PARENTS SEE RIGHT THROUGH THEM.
